i took my Gull Wing Fins off the top a long time ago. if you think about it, the Cont. and Lyc. engines all have them on the bottom. the bottom is where the heat is generated ( near the exhaust valve ) and the air needs to be directed around and thru the fins on the bottom. i built new ones longer than the original to go from 1/8" off the case to the head. the air flow can not get thru with out going thru the fins.  it dropped the temps immediately by 20 - 30 deg.
