Anyone had the standard KEYWEST CONTROLS voltage regulator (2 wires input, 2 wires output) explode for no appearant reason.
I have what is probably standard on my plane- 12 volt battery, electric fuel pump, radio, etc.. I go thru the motions to energize; key on, master switch on, fuel pump on, then start priming 4 or 5 times just like I have always done. The mag switches are not even on yet and seconds latter the regulator sounds like a fire cracker went off on blew the regulator's insides outward. Fairly nice puff of smoke as well.
After removal of the regulator, and just to make sure all equipment comes on with the switches, I energize everything again, and all seems ok, fortunately.
Seems the regulator doesnt do anything, until the engine is running, and then it regulates the voltage to the equipment/battery right?
I hate to buy another regualator at just under 100 bucks if there is potential of blowing it again, after installation.
All wiring looks OK and nothing visually seems toasted.
Anyone have ideas of whats going on. I have plenty of time on the plane prior to this happening.

YES,
Had it happen on my model II.
Send it back to Key West and the will send you a new one. Forgot what the problem
was, but they had a defect in some of the regulators.
