My first choice for an engine if I was building would be the Rotec as I love round engines but my second would be the UL. This is the second year at Lakeland that I have looked at this engine and it is now installed in more and more aircraft. This year it was in a Zenith 601 on display.
I don't have all the specs with me as I am still in my mountain cabin in NC and the info is at home in hot FL. As I recall it is an air cooled direct drive engine, fuel injected,Fadec, produces 100 hp and weighs the same(within a few pounds) of the Rotex. The price is about the same or a little less. It is mfg in Belgium.
I talked with the engineer about this engine and I am very impressed ! It is a modern air cooled engine with electronic ignition that has adopted all the good features we want without the complexity or numerous parts of the Rotax engine system (also no carbs or distributors like the Jab)
Has anyone else thought about this engine ? Hopefully this will bring up some discussion and improve the input on the list. Lowell as, you said, it has been dead recently.

Someone on this list with a red Kitfox IV was flying his Rotec round engine a couple years ago, but never heard about how things went. Does anybody know?

Maybe.....if it's who I'm thinking of, he was "Kitfox of the Month"
on the other Kitfox group (http://teamkitfox.com/Forums/
showthread.php?t=386)....one I seldom visit (loyalty and all that). I
had met him (Joe Meyeres) at Oshkosh in 2007, and he was undergoing
the engine installation then.
This may not be the same guy, Deke.

I looked into the engine, but the price put me off, as did the report
that a UL-equipped Sonex/Waiex had crash-landed (don't know how bad,
but the pilot/builder was talking on the Sonex/Waiex group later),
and the pilot would not talk about why the plane quit because of the
on-going investigation by the feds.
Of course, all engines can quit, can't they Lowell, Lynn (who's
THAT?) and others?

Well, it certainly looks interesting (http://www.ulpower.com/). The US Distributor is listing at $16,250. (http://www.flywithgus.net/html/ul_engine.html)
