|

I have a 912 UL with about 540 hrs. on it and the gearbox has not had the Rotax recommended 400 hr inspection. I have recently become aware of this inspection recommendation and am trying to find out more about it. Here are a couple of questions that I have:
1) If all seems well with the engine and the magnetic drain plug checks out OK-is the gearbox inspection still needed?
2) Can a local Rotax shop do this inspection or must it go to one of the 4 major Rotax maintenance shops?
3) About how much money should I be prepared to pay for this inspection?

Goodone,
If you gear box has a clutch then no inspection at this time is due, but if you do not have a slipper clutch then one was due at 400 hrs. If everything else checks out as you describe then yes it still needs the inspection.
A local Rotax Service Center can do the inspection. You can find them on the www.rotaxflyingclub.com website for your state or favorite shop anywhere in the US. The inspection does not take long if you pull the box and send it in. They will pull it apart and check and measure the components as it is described in the heavy maint. manual.

I charge $100 for the gearbox inspection if you ship me the gearbox. If you bring me the airplane I charge that plus the labor for removing and re-installing the prop and gearbox. The $100 includes shims (if required) but not springs if they are required. On the first gearbox inspection, if the engine has been managed and maintained properly, rarely are new springs or even shims required. Lockwood charges about $225(price as of a couple years ago) for the inspection but they always replace the springs, needed or not.
Hope this helps.
