Well, once again I had to abort my plans to make it to the Virginia
Festival of Flight. I got 166 statute miles into the trip....1hr, 20
min. from the mountains, and had to turn back due to clouds covering
the earth with no holes in sight. I gotta tell ya, that's a puckering
feeling to be 9,500' MSL, and all the dark spots that I'd hoped
to be holes turned out to be shadows of clouds. I had gone up as high
as I felt comfortable with to see better...man, was it smooth up
there....but the dark areas didn't pan out, and after 45 minutes of
that behavior, it was time to call it off, and come back home. Speed
going was 120-130mph ground, and 70-90mph ground on the return leg,
making that return leg a bit long until land once again showed up. It
was nice to see the ground again, even if it was Ohio. : )

I had tuned into some ATIS reports along the way and the ceiling was
reported as 1200 feet at most of them...not a good time to be flying,
but this was the window that presented itself, and now it's closed
for me.

Let's see, that makes 3 aborted trips to Florida, and 2 aborted trips
to Virginia....stinkin' weather anyway! I do have to say however,
that getting up above the clouds makes for a very smooth, hands-off
ride.

I'm planning on making the Suffolk Fly-in, but the weather looks
iffy, if you can believe the Weather Channel. It's showing a
clearing trend toward the end of this week, but there's another
batch of rain out west that will spoil my plans to get back home.
Playin' it day by day for now.

Sorry Lynn that you couldn't make it. I was looking forward to seeing
another KitFox.
I built a Model II but sold it. Maybe next year uh.

Sorry to hear about the disappointment, Lynn. On the other side of the
coin, you showed good sense in turning around when things got bad.
Thanks for the report.

I hope so, Glenn. It's such a short get-together...2 days...and with
the weather being what it is in the Spring, all the planets have to
line up just right for the trip there, so it's a matter of timing.
I've given up on trying to make it the 1000 miles to Florida for
Sun'n'Fun, but getting to Virginia is only about 560 miles, so much
more doable, but the weather has to cooperate.

rebuild of the Jabiru engine....runs like a clock......clockwork,
sort of....and the plane and engine are painted orange...Clockwork
Orange?....sorry, my bad. : )

Lynn,
It was a beautiful day at the Festival of Flight today. All kinds of
aircraft.
Only (1) Kitfox., John King from Warrenton Va. Hope more Fox will show
next year. Hope you will be there. It gets larger each year.

Good thing I didn't get there, as I'd have to keep my plane covered
up....John's plane would have had me throwing rocks at mine. Same
thing as when John May shows up at fly-ins around here....makes me
wish I'd have stayed at home. : )

Another thing I noticed after my 3.4 hours at VERY high altitude the
other day....hardly a bug splatter on the prop. Then I flew around
locally for about a half hour or so Saturday, and the thing is
covered with bug juices. And speaking of props, Lonnie Prince of
Prince Props flew into our little coffee and doughnut gathering on
Saturday morning with his smoke-equipped Navion. He was following a
couple of slow high-wingers, and said that he had to sit on a pillow
to be able to see over the cowl......he had the thing slowed down so
much to match their speed that the plane was in a pretty nose-high
attitude.
