Hey guys and gals: Have any of you experienced alternator failures with your 3300's? I have had two now, one with each 3300 engine I've had. Is there a way to determine if the problem is in the regulator? I am assuming it is the alternator because my RPM indication went to zero. I have carefully checked all the connections and they are good. I have recharged the battery, and it appears good also.

Hi Lynn,

We've had alternator failures but usually not that many. The majority of the time when the tach goes to zero there is a bad connection with either one of the wires from the alternator (sometimes they'll arc and burn the connector) or with the yellow tach wire.

1. Check all your connections (including the yellow tach wire). You've already done that.
2. Do the windings of the alternator look black or burnt or have a burnt ozone smell to them? They should be a shiny copper color.
3. You can hook a multi-meter to the two output wires from the alternator. With the engine running you should see between 8-28 volts AC depending on RPM. Please note it is AC power. If you are seeing between 8-28 volts then it's most likely your regulator/rectifier.

Hope this helps. Let me know how it turns out.
