I have a couple of questions for anyone out there that has a model IV with a enlarged hard baggage area built into them.

I have a model IV speedster with a larger built-in baggage compartment. I built it out of aluminum angle and plywood. I can stand in the compartment and it is firm as a rock. So, it easily holds over 200+lbs. The baggage sack it replaces was rated to 40lbs. I have decided that a 50lbs limit would be a safe limitation for this baggage area. 50lbs times a four G load would put it right at the tested 200lbs mark. I also believe it would not fail till way more than that or something else would fail first.

According to my CG chart and taking into account the extra length of the baggage toward the aft of the aircraft the CG is easily keep in center even with the 50lbs of cargo to the very aft of the baggage area. I wanted to check with others as to their experience with this.

My question is; for the people with the larger baggage area in their aircraft, have you loaded them up to max capacity? How much weight? Also was the CG affected very much on your setup? When fully loaded did it affect the flying characteristics and if so, how?

Thanks for the help.

I fly with my CG max aft. (16") No problem, though you don't let go
of the stick for very long. Wink
