You CAN do dead stick landings in a 701.. In fact you must practice. practice, practice this type of landings until you master them. Is important to get used to the drag and low weight...
First you (practically) dive the airplane at 50 miles indicated (engine at idle), yes the 701 is no sail plane. Be ready to use the power in case you level too high, is better at first tries than too low, of course
The level time is short, then you beguin to pull gently but constant and firm the elevator to keep the flair as close as possible to the strip, until you touch down, then keep the front wheel up until you beguin loosing elevator authority (to slow airflow) then gently help the wheel to touch down... No brakes needed to stop

Just forgot something, I use 15ª flaps when I have the landing spot (strip) secure, and keep 55 -60 mph. Helps me a lot to gentle the flair... maybe because the density at 5,000 ft ASL. here.
Probably with the engine off (prop stop) will be less drag, but I just dont feel yet as trying "the real thing" (engine off landing) on porpouse, plane is still too pretty to rebuild
Knock wood...

I totally agree with Gary about the power off landings. I land my 701 power off all the time. The power comes off at the numbers, the flaps down all the way, maintain airspeed all the way down. One must not flare high as the flying speed deteriorates very quickly and you are all done flying. I fly very close to the runway on down wind and try to not have to add power before touchdown, it is rare that I do. I will admit the one thing that made my 701 much easier to land was the removal of the slats and installing vortex generators. They helped in not slowing the plane so quickly on flare thereby giving me a bit more float time before actual wheels down.

I was out flying yesterday so took the opportunity to get some figures including a power off landing from 1000' into a 15 Kts direct crosswind. there was no difficulty with a 50-55kt approach flap 16 although the turn onto base with 15 kts tailwind was 'interesting'
at 960 lbs load, the sink rate and calculated glide was
700 fpm (at) 60 Kts, glide 8.7:1
600 fpm (at) 50 Kts, (55 mph) glide 8.4:1
500 fpm (at) 40 Kts approx. glide 8.1:1
The glide calculation was based on distance travelled at the speed indicated and not corrected for flightpath angle so is approximate.
What I learned from this is the best way to stretch a glide distance is going to be at the upper end of the speed range. I use not less than 50 Kts (55mph) for most situations, as it feels optimum. I had no time to measure flap 16 figures.

Ron,
You don't need VGs to land dead stick. I have no trouble coming in with the
engine shut down (not just "power-off"), and I'm certainly not the best 701
pilot in this area. I start to flair at 60-MPH, 10-degree flaps, nose-up
until it drops in. No problems even with 20-gal aboard! (FYI, N67MG has
Rotax 912ULS and weights 700# w/BRS behind baggage area and about 25# of
tools & gear plus the battery near the fire wall to counter the back CG
caused by chute)
