When I enter all parts of a kit as indicated on the builders pages on an order form, the price doesn't add up to the component kit price. What am I missing?

I believe there is a crating charge added to component and full kit
orders. That might be part of what you're missing.

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> You're not missing anything. Individual parts cost more than kit parts. I ordered the main landing gear strut, wheels and brakes for my 601XL and they cost more than the complete landing gear kit...so I ordered the kit and got a lot of extra parts for less money. It's how a business makes money.

Thanks for all your replies. If I add up the parts list for the fuselage kit, the total is about $3,500.00, the kit price is $4,725.00.
So none of the solutions provided solve this mystery. If you do the same exercise for other component kits the results are all over the map.
Maybe the part prices shown on the web are incorrect?

I doubt very seriously that you have actually accounted for ALL the parts. If you are taking your parts list from the illustrated parts manual, or even the detailed parts list, you are primarily missing a lot of hardware: solid rivets, bolts, screws, nut plates, and the like that are included in a kit, but are not listed as parts. I also doubt very seriously that you could buy all the individual airframe parts, and pieces of hardware for less than the cost of a kit.

Are you including all the miscellaneous hardware included in the kit?
Such as rivets, nuts and bolts, washers, etc. And there is also the
crating charge to cover the cost of the lumber, packaging and labor.

LOL. Close Eric.
Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if the prices and/or quantities on the web-site's part list are incorrect. However it does include hardware, rivets etc.

It now appears that you know what you are talking about. Since you are so sure about it, you definitely should go ahead and order parts instead of a kit. Why pass up a bargain ? Let us know how that works out.

I built my XL airframe via the component kit route.
Advantages of Component Kits: Less money up front. Better use of the storage space in your work area. Less time for some parts to be sitting around unused and getting damaged. You benefit from stuff that gets "new and improved" along the way before you purchase that component (for example the new BRS brackets, some of the CNC drilled skins, and the new XL nose gear would not have been available for me had I bought the whole kit at once back in 2006). Long lead times for some parts from other vendors become less of a problem (important for guys going the Corvair route).
Disadvantages of Component Kits:: Component kits are by no means complete. Contents of component kits will change, and pieces (like forward top skins) that were included in a particular sub-kit 3 years ago may be included in a different sub kit by the time you get to it. I've had to chase a lot of hardware, and there are a lot of times (as a first time builder) that I've not known that I needed something "until I needed it". Shipping and handling costs will rise. Redesigned parts that you receive later will not match your set of plans that was printed 3 years ago. If Zenith goes out of business you may be stuck with pieces for half an airplane. Spousal support that was there when you started on the $300 rudder kit may become a pain point when you need to drop a few more thousand dollars on the instruments, after dropping a few thousand on the engine, after dropping a few thousand on the fuselage, after dropping a few thousand on the wings........
Also if you go the component route you will end up fabricating more stuff yourself (I actually consider this as an advantage, but then there is a cost associated with tools and the value of your time).
The right decision also depends on WHEN you make it. I honestly don't know if I'd make the same decisions if I were just starting today, although in hindsight it was a good decision for me as I look back after having started in 2006 (when the market viewed the XL in a different light than is the case in 2009).
Going the component route worked great for me.

I went the component kit route... I think it is the right way for some, but it ended up costing me several thousand dollars more then I should have spent. I made my first purchase in October of 2006, and was done purchasing a few months later. If I would have waited perhaps a year or more to complete the purchase then the opportunity costs would have been more in line.
The component kits were something like $1000.00 more expensive than the complete kit, plus shipping is more.
I also ended up reordering a few parts to get the newer versions, so that added to the costs. My total costs with Zenith are right at $19000.00 counting component kits, shipping, extra stuff, etc... Looking back, if building wasn't so much fun, it would have been more financially prudent to go with the QB kit and saved all the hours. That would have also got me the LR fuel tanks and in the air much faster.
In the end, go with your budget and work on the plane as often as you can. You will see progress and learn a lot any way you go.
I am almost done and moving to the airport for final assembly next month.

Guys, if you would just call the factory they will tell you what the total cost of a sub kit is.
