I have flown my Lightning several times and do not have the highest degree of faith in my ASIs.
I have a small steam gauge ASI and my EFIS. My EFIS is fully adjustable across the speed range to make up for a pitot/static setup that is not perfect.
I tee off of each line to go to each instrument.
My question to you all is that once you have you instruments setup, how do you verify them?
Am I missing anything?
Jim!

Jim,
I generally use two ways. Close formation with an airplane that I know is accurate - like the Grand Rapids EFIS system in my Esqual, or flying wind triangle checks using a GPS. One other way that is similar to what we talked about last Saturday at Green Landings is outlined at: http://www.iflyez.com/manometer.shtml

Thanks Buz. I was looking for that web page and could not find it.

Jim
I my Esqual, my static ports were installed in a "high pressure" area of the fuselage giving me a 10 mph lower reading. Be sure your static ports are mounted in the right location. I adjusted mine with deflectors.
Just a thought.
Buz, how do you like the new prop, you have been running it for awhile, should I get one? I'm showing 142 indicated (at)3,000 ft (at)2850 rpm with 2 people and fuel. I lose about 7 to 8 mph when temps in Mn. go up. Tells me I need to "bite" more air.

Jim,
If you have a GPS you can go up and perform a wind triangle. Set power for a certain speed and do not change it. Fly 360 for a few minutes, write down your GS and IAS and TAS if you can other wise OAT to get the TAS later. Turn to 120 and do the same. Than fly 240 and do the same. Take all your numbers back to the ground with you. Add up and divide your GS to get an average, than do the same With the TAS after you have figured it out. The TAS and GS should be about the same. You can do this at several speeds say 70mph on up to 140mph and make a graph. Than you can work from there to adjust the system.

Hi Dave,
Good to hear from you again. When comparing airspeeds, Nick and I normally like to use true airspeeds and a constant density altitude so that the numbers are closer to comparing apples and apples. So I will have to make a run at 3,000 MSL and 2850 to see what my indicated airspeed actually is. But the answer to your basic question is yes, I like the 62/60 prop. Basically 2850 rpm will give me a True airspeed of 160 to 162 mph or so (burning 6 gph). I am guessing that indicated would probably be 150 to 152 mph, but will have to check it later for you. I have the Cub here at JGG now getting ready for Sentimental Journey next week. Will go flying later today to FKN if the weather is good and take the Esqual up for a quick flight to get the actual indicated speed number for you.
Two things to consider on your question about you needing more bite for your prop. First, it is normal to expect some loss of speed as the temperatures go up. The air is thinner and that will effect both the "wing" and the power the engine can produce. That is why we like to compare speeds at a constant density altitude. Second thing to think about is the airframe on your Esqual. I can't remember if you have the Lightning cowl, gear leg fairings and wheel pants, but if you do not, your Esqual is producing more drag and thus will be probably 10 to 20 mph slower than one with the cleaner Lightning nose, gear legs, and pants.
Blue Skies,
Buz

Buz
Thanks for the input on the prop, I gotta get one. Not only does temp affect airframe and prop bite, but of course thick cold air will also give a higher indicated.
When it is 10 below zero versus 70 above is where I get some of my GPS "reality" on speeds.
I do not have the Lightning cowl but am thinking that way. Mine is showing wear from the muffler heat,I get much more cabin heat from the muffler than with through exhaust so I put up with the "tightness" of the muffler, do have same wheel pants and fairings as you.
I also have 30 lbs of BRS that may slow er up a bit.
thanks again--Dave

Dave
Which invites the question, if one were to use fuselage static ports, what is the correct location?

Dave,
I did get a quick flight in this afternoon and made several runs at 3,000 feet so I could give you some indicated airspeed numbers. OAT was 86 degrees on the ramp and 80 degrees at 3,000' and 2850 rpm gave me 150 mph indicated airspeed (TAS was right at 158 mph). Indicated fuel flow was 5.8 gph which was probably closer to 5.5 gph since I have my fuel flow set slightly on the conservative side. All up weight for that flight was probably about 1175 pounds.
To get the Lightning cowl to fit the Esqual takes a bit of extra work but it is well worth the effort. Besides being faster, I think it cools better as well. Nick did some good research when he designed it.
Hope this helps.

Having ordered the cowlings and 'speed kit' in my repair order in
February and received them a few weeks ago I've always been interested
in Buz's figures.
I've converted them into 'real money' below for the Europeans on the
list.
One surprising thing was the engine mount I ordered. When I had the
runway excursion the nose leg twisted the engine mount a tiny bit.
Lifted the engine a couple of mm (16th). Arion have supplied me with a
new one but it's different than the original Esqual. 17mm different
which as you'll know is a lot in aviation (further fwd). None of my
cables and wiring fitted. I was able to fix that, W+B further forward,
great just what I like (stability is one of my certification
challenges). However, there was nothing wrong with my cowls but I had
ordered the Lightning cowls as I'd never liked forcing the 3300 into the
Rotax space in the Esqual cowl (scorched for sure) and I like the LS
look of Buz's beautiful aircraft. Good job there was a new cowl in the
box as the cowls are not something that can be stretched! I've asked
Arion why it's moved and they are ruminating, anyhow if an Esqual ever
needs a new mount be ready to fit new cowls ( next challenge is to
convince the insurance I needed them....).
Great numbers Buz, I have the newer engine and a different prop so I'll
probably never match them but somewhere close would be nice.
Regards, Clive
