I don't know if this is a permanent offering, or
a temporary, like when I got it, but today I installed
a new beta version of Voyager flight software
(by Seattle Avionics), and as I was clicking through
my chart downloads I hit a web link that launched a
subscription page for charts.
https://www.seattleavionics.com/eCommerce/Buy1.aspx
I see that they now have listed a couple of options
for Lifetime EFB and IFR chart subscriptions, so you
can buy the software, and pay once for charts forever.
The EFB is the one that I have, and it's nice because
with a $40 bluetooth GPS, you get georeferenced approach
plates AND sectionals AND low/high enroute IFR charts.
The IFR version is there too, that doesn't have in-flight
GPS capability.
Yes, it's a lot of money at $597/829 for the chart
subscription, but, it gives you current charts for
the whole US, basically forever. When you compare
it to the annual cost of chart updates for your
panel GPS, that is actually a great deal...and since
it's lifetime, it's a real incentive.
I'm not tied to the company in any way, but have been
really happy and I've had offline emails many times
asking about my lifetime subscription, so I figured
there'd be a few folks who would be excited that
it's available again. It's nice to be able to jump
in the plane at any time and have every chart you
need. Heck, the Garmin 696 subcription for a year
alone will blow this cost out of the water, and
that's not even geo-referenced!

If you just want charts, another combination I've been considering for a low cost solution is the Barnes and Noble new Nook reader(aka the Kindle killer) and the free PDFPlates. I haven't tried it but there is no reason it wouldn't work given the Nook reads PDF's.
Total cost about $260 plus tax.

I'd be careful about lifetime offers. I once had a car battery from JC Pennys that was guaranteed for life. Then they went bankrupt.

For the price though, if you get more than 2 years, it is less than
buying it for two years. They have been around for a while and growing,
so should be a safe bet.

From looking at their Beta release that I'm checking out,
their Data manager supports both Voyager and the AV8OR GPS,
so apparently somehow they built a relationship with those
guys too. So it does seem that they're growing. They also
I think just released a total solution where you buy the
tablet pre-loaded and it was some pretty darn good price
like just over $1000 or something.
I can't say it's right for everyone, but really, there's
no way any handheld or non-panel EFIS can compare to the
number of features for the price, and it's a great flight
planner too. So I figure it's something I'll be using
forever anyway. It usually plans my flight times within
a minute or two of actual point-to-point times, so I use
it all the time.

I went with the tablet with the internal hard drive. I loaded the beta last night and checked the hard drive usage. It is over 38g. I have been planning on upgrading the the 32g SSD (which is the only option available) but now I am going to have to figure how they are handling this. And I have added nothing. This is not good
Will have to check to see where all the memory is going. Looks like it downloaded all the approach plates, sectionals and IFR maps for the US but I don't think it should have chewed up 38g. for the data + the tablet
PC OS.
Tim, do you have any idea how much just your data is consuming?

Gary, SSD's have been well over 32GB for more than a year. I use a 60GB SSD that I bought a year ago to transfer files between my office and home. It is interchangeable with any laptop that is less than a couple years old.

If I only had that option. They are using the 1.8" PATA ZIF drive and they are only available in 16 and 32g that are compatible.
The tablet they are selling appears to be one of the first of the new Net Books that is also a tablet.

Gary,
I'm not sure how yours got so full. I download all charts except only 2
of the High Altitude IFR charts, and I have lots of space left. I
wonder if you have a duplication of your chart storage or something.
Maybe during loading the beta you copied the charts and duplicated them?
I'll load the beta on my tablet tonight and see what I have for free
space, but you should have plenty left on even a 32GB drive. Mine is
a 32, and I think I have a lot of other stuff there too.
If you get too lost, I can email you what you'd need to do to do a
complete removal and re-install, and you could see what it does. But
first I'll upgrade mine and let you know how it comes out.
I have it on my work laptop and I didn't see any real increase
in space after loading it....so I'm guessing you have something
copied or filling up extra space, like maybe a duplicate chart
repository.

I figure that is what is going on but right now time at home is at a premium. Heading to California this Sat in the -10 and trying to make sure everything is in order. Will be the first real long trip with good potential of IFR (rain) at my destination.

OK, I just verified space for you.
I have about 6.5GB free on a 32GB drive, with a full install,
including every Approach Plate, Every Sectional, Every
TAC, every WAC, Every Low Altitude Enroute, and 2 of
the 12 High Altitude enroutes. So most of the charts
available and actually far more than I'll ever use. I could
easily trim space by deleting the High Enroutes, and many
of the WAC's and Sectionals from Alaska until I go there.
After upgrading to the latest version of Beta that just came
out this week, I actually got .1GB MORE space left than before.
On that same tablet, I also have installed:
Microsoft Word and Excel from Office 2003
Microsoft Streets and Trips 2009
A large motorola program for using your phone as
a broadband modem.
Some network utilities and VPN Client for
doing work things.
A virtual drive program
Vi for windows editor
Lots of MS power Toys
AVG antivirus
Adobe reader
Winamp
Zone alarm pro
So there are plenty of things for me to use it as a work
computer while I'm out.
So, if you're overflowing a 32GB drive, you've got
something else going on, but it isn't Voyager that's
doing it.

I have a file dated 10/22/09 which is the last 28 day chart cycle update that is 18G in size. Looks like my last chart cycle update messed up. I have emailed Seattle support and see what they say. I am not touching anything until I coordinate it with them in case they need it for debugging.
After deleting that file, then my total usage looks like it will be in line with yours.
Thanks

Voyager's lifetime subscription offer has prompted me to consider one of their EFB packages. Does anyone have experience with both their Skypad and the AV8OR ACE unit? Is there something that I am missing about the AV8OR that makes it worth nearly another $1000? My panel has dual Cheltons, AF3400EE as a backup efis, WSI weather and Freeflight WAAS, so I am thinking the AV8OR would not offer any new functions.

I think you're right on... You'd get little use out of a handheld. If
you had a much more meager panel, then maybe. I know almost nothing
about their hardware, but I suggest getting something that runs it
well and absolutely essential is an SSD. I run an old LE1600, and a
while back I bought one and put an SSD in it for a friend for a total
of about $800 with chargers. I wouldn't go less powerful than that.
I'm actually considering buying another or an LS800 or something for
Andrea to use in place of a handheld for the cherokee. The software
does all you really need, if you couple it to a GPS. Just make sure
your airplane pc has Bluetooth.

I have Seattle Avionics SkyPad. Like time, I have been very happy with the unit (checking my email & this forum with it right now...)
SSD - I have the 32 gig SSD drive and have ever chart, approach plate, Sectional, TACs, Lo-Enroute etc charts for the entire country installed. Takes up about 7-8 gigs. I find the 32gig size to be more than adequate.
Lifetime - I have the lifetime charts..great deal. What a difference having every plate and chart in the country.
SkyPad - nice device. I do all my weather and trip planning on it as well as my inflight work on it. Completely underestimated the convenience of doing it all on one machine......the skypad is definitely a great way to go...
Financial Health of Seattle Avionics - I think that it helps alot that Bendix/King outsources their chart processing to SA. Gives SA more cash flow and I take comfort in knowing that Bendix/King takes great strides to keep their employees onboard..
----- Short answer is JUST DO IT! The Skypad is a great deal!
Best,
Doug

Doug,
JUST DO IT works for me. In fact I have already done it, but I went with an LE1600 modified per the description on Tim's web site. I have about $700 and an hour's time in the tablet pc with the ssd drive and memory upgrade. If you can build an RV10 you will be able to do this upgrade. Makes for a very quick and slick EFB. I am still learning my way around the Voyager software, but agree it is great to have all charts on board. After years of updating my Jepp charts, it is almost worth the cost of Voyager's lifetime subscription just to have the auto-updates.

With the SkyPad and their software..... if you already have XM Satellite weather coming in to a Garmin 496, can you tie into it and have it available for the SkyPad?
Thanks,

Hi Don,
I'm not 100% sure but I think the wx weather has to come from XM's WX box. The team at Seattle Avionics could tell you for sure. I have a seperate XM box that picks up the weather and then communicates it to my SkyPad via bluetooth.
On the 496, as you know, the XM "box" is built into the unit. Great idea and I wish all vendors could offer this for their system but I guess Garmin has the exclusive right to have the XM box being built in. Smart of Garmin, I guess.
I would be once you have the SkyPad, you would not want/need your 496. All you would need is the XM bluetooth box and you should be good to go....
Best,
Doug

I've been thinking of taking the plunge and buying a system and voyager as
well. I've looked around and found the line of netbook that Seattle
Avionics sells as their skypad. It's sub $500 with a rotating hard disk.
I found what I think would make a better platform at Newegg while looking at
some of the newer netbooks. I'm sure it would run things well. Windows 7
is a plus over XP I'd think.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220661 This unit
has wifi, Bluetooth, multi-touch screen, and 32GB SSD for just a bit over
$500. Only 1GB of RAM so it would probably be best to bump it up to 2GB but
that would be cheap.
The Bluetooth gps they have pictured on their site is this one:
http://www.buygpsnow.com/GlobalSat-BT-368i-SiRF-III-Bluetooth-GPS-Receiver-B
T368i_989.aspx which they don't list a separate price for just in the
bundle.
Just need to wait for SEA Avionics to have another "lifetime" sale!!
