Hello all,

What are the pluses - minuses of using keyed vs. keyless rivnuts.  What is the difference?

I'm assuming (I know thats dangerous) that the "keyed" rivnuts simply have a protruding spot that helps in avoiding the rivnut from spinning in it's hole.

Bill,
You are correct, the keyed rivnuts will not (hopefully) spin.

If possible don't use rivnuts for a couple of reason ,can be a bit tricky to install correctly.ALL types may and do spin if the protruding end of the fastener thread is corroded and it jams onto the rivnut or you over tighten the fastener and it's easy to strip the threads as rivnuts are usually made from Al and when they do it's a a pain to take them out as they spin around as you drill and it usually leaves a larger hole then the original rivnut. [Work with these little suckers on vintage aircraft] Don't see any evidence of stress fatigue arising out of notching the holes for the keyed type but keep in mind you do need the proper size tools especially for the notching. Cheers

I was going to use Rivnuts and got some to play with and see how they worked. I have nut plates and no rivnuts in my plane.

After having rivnuts (not keyed) on several spots on my plane I wouldn't use them again. I even used located on them. I'm convinced that there are rivnuts that have spun and those that will.

Bill,

You should also be careful about what kind of nutplates you get. I got some of the floating nutplate types in which the nuts are prone to spin. That's no better than rivnuts. If you get the floating type (which I don't recommend) make sure the nut cages are super stout. I have replaced all the spinning ones with the rigid type nutplates.

I've put hundreds in and I've properly come across a hand full with damaged floating nuts and the main cause is cross threading /over tightening or plain old age.We spray/soak the fasteners with Ardrox or Boeshield type long term corrosion inhibitors.Keeping in mind these anchor nuts are from reputable aircraft suppliers.Cheers

I'd second this. It is possible to get rivnuts to work, but it takes a lot of
practice, and a lot of rivnuts get wasted in the process. By the time one
learns how to set a rivnut, enough rivnuts have been used that the nut plates
would look cheap in comparison, not to mention the time involved.

I don't know how many times I've had to drill out a rivnut, and do the job
again. Sometimes, on certificated aircraft, there is no choice, because the
manufacturer used rivnuts. It's also the only way I've found to set a
fastener when the back area isn't accessable, unless one is going to use
pulled rivets.

I really feel most of us (including me) are better off with nut plates.

DO NOT PUT LOCKTIGHT ON THEM! IF THEY GET STUCK THE RIVNUT WILL UNKATCH AND YOU HAVE TO DRILL THE ENTIRE THING OUT,or hold it with plyers from the back.

How about if I just remove them all from my plane? Problem solved.
