Since the recent discussion about fuel caps, I looked at my plans and it does say to open up the 1/16 inch vent hole to 1/8 inch. Has anyone done this and would you explain the procedure?

Also while looking at fuel caps, I see Aircraft Spruce has a vented cap (05-03459) with a hole drilled on the outside (I assume the hole faces forward for ram pressure) that looks very similar to ours. Has anyone modified their cap in this way or is there a problem with doing this?

Thanks

Mike,
I did mine, just drilled through the inside layer of the cap only. Make sure any metal shards are completely cleaned out. This extra hole could have also added to the porting of fuel over the wing. I replaced them with the pitot tube type caps and do not port any more fuel over the wing. Those ACS vented caps might also work.

Mike,
There was no vent hole in the caps that came with my 701 kit. I drilled a hole in the center of the top of the cap, making certain you don’t go any further than the outer skin of the cap. I see Bob Spudis said he drilled through the inside of the cap. All I know is that my caps vent just fine.

I totally missed this on the plans but I have not had any problems with

fuel flow in over 70 hours. That being said, I went out and drilled the
hole per the plans.

Dan, did you add a new hole or just enlarge the old ones? Any problems with leakage?

There was not a hole in the top of the cap so I drilled one per the

plans. I am about to go fly and check it out but I do not expect to see
any difference since I did not have any problems before.

I am just guessing here but..... The caps Zenith supplied with my 801 kit were vented but not to the top, they have small holes that breath under and outboard of the top surface. After my 801 stained my paint on the first flight I quickly surveyed the whole situation and bought two more caps from Zenith. Those I epoxied up the holes to make them non vented since my fuel system incorporated additional venting to the tanks terminating under the wings. No siphoning of the fuel out the top of the wings now and after 270 hours and a few thousand gallons burned not a hint of venting issues. YMMV.

Ben,
The 701 tanks are not vented, except through the cap.

I figured that. The 801's are not either. Because of the 801 crash in Texas a few years ago I purposely ran multiple vents in my fuel system so as to not repeat that exercise..
