Hello list members, Doug and D. Wysong.

I found out the problem with the hard starting. Grounding was good,
battery good but the starter solenoid was bad.
One friend mentioned that this could be caused by a low voltage
starting from when the regulator/rectifier died. When I tried to start
the engine a few times with a low voltage,
the solenoid may have partly connected and created a blockage between
the internal connection.????

At least I found the cause and had to let you all know.
Thank you for your advise Doug and D. Wysong.

Best regards,
Johann G.

Hi Johann:

Good to see you have your 701 flying.

What engine do you have on your airplane?

I had a hard starting problem with my first 912 back in 1994. Eventually discovered closing the spark plug gap from .028 down to .020-.025" eliminated the problem. Haven't had it with my two 912ULS engines.

Haven't read the thread or anything else on the Rotax List, so I am probably repeating something someone else has shared with you. Starter needs to turn the engine 200 rpm to get the Ducati ignition system to fire. A low battery, poor connections, solenoid, etc., all contribute to this problem.

Give me a shout back copy some times.

Johann,

Low voltage is unlikely to harm the starter solenoid, it will
either close the connector or not, and is not likely to chatter.
Corrosion is much more likely.

The starter normally runs exclusively off battery. The voltage regulator
controls the alternator and doesn't effect the battery voltage.

Hello Ira.

Thank you very much for the advice. Could there be a corrosion inside
the solenoid?
The original Ducati regulator/rectifier was tested with engine running
on the C connection, and there was no charging detected.
Because the charging was not keeping the battery fully charged, it
drained during my flight that day.
I wanted to fly one more circuit before calling it a day, and then
discovered that the battery was drained.
Replaced the regulator/rectifier, charged the battery and then
nothing, just a very slight turn of the prop, like the battery was dead.
Jumped it with my car, and no change. When we gave the solenoid a
direct hit from a fully charged battery, at the same time I turned the
switch starter, it turned normally.
After that, everything has been working, but I decided to replace the
solenoid if it could be in and out. Do not want to be stranded
somewhere with a bad solenoid.

I have checked all connections from the battery to the starter and
everything is clean.

Best regards,
Johann G.
