Hi All,
I'm using the gascolator that came with my quickbuild on my 601XL. It
looks like an Aircraft Spruce part.
The last two times I've sumped fuel from the gascolator the 100LL has
been yellow in color, looks like a urine sample almost. The tanks sump
fine ie 100LL blue and once I clear out the yellow fluid the engine runs
fine. I've only run 100LL and no mogas.
In talking with my A&P/Tech Counselor we've come to the conclusion that
the color must be coming from the gascolator finish. I've removed the
bowl and it does appear the finish (alodine) is dissolving ?
Has anyone else seen this ? My A&P hasnt ever seen this before and he's
a pretty experienced guy.
Thanks,
John Davis

John,
In the beginning, I sumped a discoloration also for some time, rather
brownish/yellowish in color. I attributed it to the sealant I used in
installing all my fittings, a brown colored Permatex product I believe. I
also use the gascolator from the kit - no problems.

I've seen this too. I have an Andair gascolator.
I suspected that the discolouration was coming from the rubber fuel lines,
so I put some fuel in a glass bottle with a short length of fuel line. After
a few days, the fuel was a brownish yellow. I have left the bottle now for
several months and it hasn't got any darker, so I assume that it was
something on the surface of the rubber that was being dissolved, possibly
some sort of lubricant used in the manufacture.
My next step will be to replace the contaminated fuel in the bottle with
fresh to see if that gets discoloured. One day I may get around to doing it!

Hello John, Yesterday the exact same problem happened to me with our club plane, 1976 PA 151. Fuel drained from the gascolator looked like a yellow urine sample. It eventually turned to blue. A local mechanic guessed it was car gas but that's not it. This has happened 2 times since an annual where a fuel line was changed.
I'm convinced it is something dissolving in the bowl. Another mechanic suggested looking in the bowl for an answer.
We saved a sample and may have an ave gas supplier analyze it if its not too much $. Keep me posted. Good Luck, George

The dyes used in avgas are designed to lose their color when two
different grades of avgas are mixed together. In this case, it may
just be that the blue dye in the avgas is reacting to some residue
left on the new fuel lines from the manufacturing process. As the
residue is flushed out of the system over time, the issue should go
away.
