Hey Guys,
All the first flights are inspiring for sure -- congrats to all and thanks for the motivation!
Here are a couple of pictures of this weekend's work on the final stripes -- painting in my shop in the backyard. We brought it over from his garage to my house using a skid truck with no incidents. I don't have web site links, so if anyone is interested in more detailed preparation pictures, I'll be glad to send them along. The wheel pants are just set on the ground to see how they will match up.
For a first, I think this is turning out OK and the owner is pleased -- let me know what you think.
I glassed in the top seatbelt anchor screws (with the trick learned here of cutting a slot and embedding a pop rivet stud in it to keep it from turning), molded the upper part of the main gear pants to be one unit, and glassed in a cloth strip around all the windows overlapping plexi and canopy before smoothing to contour -- so far no cracks whatsoever.
Some masking tape apparently loosened up around the inside of the pilot's window when painting the parts Abby recommends inside, and I got overspray on the plexi. I just used what I have for buffing cars (Meguiare's buffing, then fine polishing, then swirl remover compound) and it looks good to go.
Wing tips are the last of the paint. We haven't decided yet about horizontal stab tips yet.
Later, - Lew

I really like your paint scheme. That red accent line is very sharp indeed!
Cheers

Hey Mike,
HAH! You got the "hot" part right, I have to turn the a/c off when I turn the exhaust fan on.
OK, here goes on the system for painting, (fire away!):
1) Scuff all aluminum with scotchbright or fine paper on orbital sander, wipe down with lacquer thinner (I haven't used acetone for anything but melting plastic since I was a kid).
2) Fill chosen rivet lines, dings etc. with either Evercoat Rage Extreme body filler, or West System 105 epoxy resin and 206 slow hardener & micro beads. Sand flush. Wipe down with laq thinner.
3)Sand all fiberglass to get mold sheen, etc. off. Blow off and wipe down with laq thinner.
4) Fill all fiberglass with slurry of West System epoxy and beads, sand flush, wipe down with laq thinner.
5) Prime all aluminum to be painted with Dupont Nason 491-17 etch primer with 441-43 activator reducer added.
6) Come back over etch primer within 20 minutes with Dupont Nason 421-19 2K urethane primer with 483-87 harkener added, as well as covering all fiberglass with the 2K at this time.
7) Sand most of the 2K off to smooth out high/low spots, pin holes, etc., wipe down with laq thinner, and reprime with 2K. Sand again, then hand sand with 320 grit wet/dry paper. Wipe down with laq thinner.
8 Tape off everything that doesn't get painted. Paint white with Dupont Centari Acrylic enamel with 8022S reducer and Mar-Hyde #2612 Wet Look hardener added.
9) Tape off stripe lines. Scuff up white paint to improve adhesion where color will go, tape off all but where blue goes, wipe down with laq thinner, paint blue stripes (same Dupont Centari acrylic enamel - metalic added.
10) Tape off all but red stripes, scuff, wipe down, paint red stripes.
11) Carefully unwrap, pulling final tape next to color away from color so it won't accidentally lift color stripes on edges.
12) Clean up any overspray. Sit back and grin.
As you can tell this is VERY labor intensive. For those paying painters, it's probably worth whatever you're paying!

The last of the painting! ...? Seems like every time we say "last of", we end up revisiting it at least once more!
It will be great to see how they all fit together, hopefully not too much longer.
