The CD-5 (chinese version) *apppears* identical to the Russian mag used on the AI-14R engine series. Consider the ignition "advance" feature as more like an ignition "retard" feature. That is a starting aid. Full advance comes up at a low RPM, around 1600-1700. The 260HP version of the AI-14R was rated at 2350 RPM, running a total advance (by the crank) of 30 +/- 2 degrees. The Huosai 285 looks a *lot* like that old Eastern Block AI-14R. Coincidence, I'm sure...
On my M-14P, I have run 19-20 minutes full throttle, full prop RPM on occasions, such as in the old Sun 'n Fun 60 race. No mis-fires, regardless of the mag being used. Yes, there may be some initial bucking and protests as carbon deposits come off the combustion chamber if the engine has not been cleaned out lately. Kinda like my old small block chevy. How fast could a 283 4-barrel go? No one knows, there isn't a straight road long enough, just keeps winding out as the engine cleans itself out :>)
