I just bought a 66" 3 blade warp prop for my Mark III / Rotax 582. For those of you flying 582's, do I need a prop extension or will I have plenty of clearance? Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

The blades on the Warp Drive is pretty stiff. You should be fine. I've run tapered and straight blades and never had a clearance problem EXCEPT with poorly installed flap bellhorns. When I set them up per plans that problem went away.

Mark,

I also have a Mark IIIc with Warp Drive (3 bladed). It has a 582 with B gearbox and no extension. Clearance has not been a problem.

I have a 66 inch warp on my Firestar mounted on an HKS motor. I first used it without an extension, I can't remember how many hours, but the drumming from the prop ended up cracking the Poly fiber paint on the right wing. Little spider cracks. Granted the fabric is not quite as tight as it could have been, but I put an extension on it and the reduction in noise was worth it. There was enough clearance and the wrap is stiff enough you aren't going to have any trouble, but If you have one handy, I personally would put it on.

Don't worry only about the clearance

The extension will give you better performance, quieter operation.

If you have a "B" box, I think the prop inertia will be too great. It may work for years & years, but maybe not......
