I went without it. It seemed like a lot of work and increased the opportunities to crack the plastic. I can see nothing gained from it even from a "looks" point of view.

I didn’t put it on or need it. I think in the past the canopies didn’t come from the factory as accurately trimmed. The metal flashing allowed you to cover any uneven edge on the plastic. Mine was a pre-Todd’s canopy.

Bill, I left it off. I just didn't see that it added anything but a bit of complication.

Bill,

I have it because of the gap between my canopy and fuselage.

It reduces visability to the horizon greatly. If you have a good fit of the canopy to fuselage, I would recommed against the flashing.

Bill,
I built my 601 XL with flashing front and rear. The reason I did so was because I'm taller than the average dude, and raised the entire canopy one inch for additional head room, which made the flashing mandatory. I sit high enough inside the canpoy that the flashing doesn't enter my sightline at all. I also moved my rudder pedals ahead 2 1/4". I'm chasing that 40th hour of the testing phase, and this plane flies great.

Greetings,

My canopy did not have the flashing originally.

Due to my ineptness, I managed to raise the canopy with a plastic box setting on the glare shield -- you guessed it when the two came into contact with one another, it sounded like 45 round went off and the resulting damage was a fairly good size chunk of the canopy plastic was laying on the ground.

At that time the bubble was over $500.00 and I would have all the work of refitting. I chose to glue the plastic back in place and the trim did a good job of covering the damage.

You do have a better sight picture without the trim, so I would recommend saving it's use until you have accident like I did. Hopefully that won't happen to you!

Mack
