That's awesome, Don! Glad it went well for you. What kind of
plane did you end up in for your training? That flyoff should
give you a good bit of experience.

I really lucked out... I became farely good friends with the FAA inspector... he not only came out and inspected the plane on his own time, but afterward we all went out to dinner. Anyway, I specifically asked for an area to the west and north of the Lincoln airport so it would include the Oroville and Willows airports (still gotta eat, right), then he not only granted that, but gave me the 50 mile radiius as well.
Thanks, Don

I'm trying... flew a couple of hours today.  Kim has a class reunion a month out, so if I can get the hours flown off, that would be a good tuneup. Mark Carey and Jim Rore are both flying their 10's from here.... and I think they wouldn't mind if we joined them. Kim's son Max graduates from Army basic training right smack in the middle of Osh... so we're a little undecided. Hope to see you there. Don

Well the 40 hours have been flown off.... now the world is open for us to fly over. The planes first flight was on the 9th of June, and it has been in the air every day since then.... 2 times on several days, and 3 times on one. Unfortunately, at the same time we completed phase I the temps have gone over the century mark. So far Kim has been aboard for a couple of flights, one to dinner at Nancy's in Willows, the other to Auburn for breakfast. Yesterday in the late afternoon my brother, Dave, and his wife, Sue, braved the temps and made seperate flights around the Lincoln airport. They were both very impressed. Although the temps were still hot, the air was very calm, so the plane was so smooth it was practically unbelievable. So far there are 4 of us that now know what the Van's family is talking about when they refer to the RV grin! My friend Tim said it best, "it's hard to believe that this was once just a pile of parts".

We have had six first flights from our back porch in the last two months. A pair of doves built a rental unit on our trellis. There have been 3 pairs occupying the same nest over the time period. My wife just cleans up under the unit and a new pair moves in. My wife and daughter are watching for another first flight right now. If you think the RV10 first flight gives pause . Imagine the first flight, first lesson, and first solo all rolled into one.

Don,

Congratulations again. You have really been putting in the hours since you got back. Keep us posted on your temperature problem. Being in TX it gets stinking hot here in the summer and I am a bit concerned about my temps. I ordered an AirFlow oil cooler thru Alex. It has more cooling surface area but has the same footprint. The common solution to heat is adding more vent louvers. That seems so inelegant and I'm hoping that your agile mind will come up with a better fix. So there is a challenge for you!

Wendy and I are in the mountains of CO with the RV-6 and on our way to Yellowstone and then Johnson Creek, ID. Sure wish I had the 10 completed because it is crowded in the 6 with all the camping gear.

You need to get those gear leg fairings on so you can go really fast!

Thanks for the email.... and yes, up to yesterday, I flew everyday... at least once. I also ordered a cooler from Alex... should be here this week. Will let you know the difference. Also thinking of some other mods.
Your trip sounds great. Wish we were with you. Soon.
By the way, after my first 2 landings,,,,, greased them,,,, I installed all the pants and fairings. I will admit that I left them off just in case I did a booboo. But so far with over 30 landings, its been a complete nonissue!
It's a little hard for those who know me to believe how conservative I am with the plane. I did manage to see 187 knots at one point early on, but the temps here have me way off that mark.
Take care and have fun..... Don and Kim

Ps. we may be paying you a visit later this month or next.
