Daniel, I've had to do this on my Firestar and a few other aircraft so if you want a quick primer, I'll give it a shot. It helps to have a helper to record values and read the tape when you set the pilot's position. One assumption here is that your Firestar has a 2 stroke engine so there is no oil weight variable.
  1. Get the aircraft in position. For a Kolb, prop up the tail wheel until the bottom of the wing is at 9 degrees.
  2. I don't like to work with negative numbers so I set zero datum by dropping a plumb line from the front of the nose cone.
  3. Run a tape measure from the zero datum to at least the contact point of the tail wheel
  4. Now start dropping plumb lines. You need the pilot station (your navel when seated in the aircraft as you would be while flying, the contact point of the main gear, the leading and trailing edge of the wing, the center of the fuel tank and the contact point of the tailwheel.
  5. Weigh the aircraft in position.
  6. Calculate the datum for the 18, 25 and 35% chord position.
  7. Use heaviest pilot wt. say 270 lb, and 1/2 gallon of fuel as the most fwd cg condition. it should come out at or aft of the 18% point.
  8. Use lightest pilot wt. say 150 lb. and full fuel as the most aft cg condition. It should fall at or fwd of the 35% point.
Well that's how I did it and the FAA rep or the DAR never questioned my data.
