Greeting Fellow RV-8/8a Builders, Hijacking here; who can tell me how wide the gap between fuselage top skin and cowl fiberglass should be to allow for paint? Too wide and it would show, but too thin and the paint will pop with expansion. Hope to hear from you, Best regards, Bill

Bill,
Fit it as tight as you can. You can easily use a Permagrit file and quickly remove as much material as you need for paint. The paint guys will know the answer about the gap and may even do the work for you. If you paint it yourself, then worry about getting the correct gap when the time comes.
My gap varies a bit because the damn thing is such a challenge to fit, but I've got about 1/16 gap. I'm using the Skybolt fasteners and they give a bit, so the gap is going to vary anyway - even with hinges.

The saw blade technique works great. If you want a tighter fit you can use a pull saw that has a thinner blade. This technique also works well on the various empennage tips. But be careful too tight is definitely not a good thing for the cowl because the paint will chip. I know from experience.
