Hi folks. I am trying to determine the ratio of my Rotax 582 C Box. The serial number on the front case is 7042. Does anyone know of site with serial number lookup to determine ratio from the numbers??
Cheers

Ken, I don't think there is any way to look up the gear ratio. It should be stamped on the front of the gear box right behind the prop and just above the drain plug. It will be one of these numbers, 2.62, 3.00, 3.47, or 4.10.
If yours doesn't have the ratio stamped you can count the engine revolutions with one turn of the prop flange. Look in the intake or pull the plugs and count the times the piston returns to the starting point with one complete revolution of the prop flange. Example, if it is less than 3 your ratio is 2.62. More than 3 and and less than 4, it is 3.47, etc.

Isn't there an exposed flywheel that you can mark, and thereby get
the exact ratio?

Yep, there is a nice big hole in the side of the gear box. Just mark the hardy joint and count how many times it turns with one prop revolution.

I remember reading in one of the KITFOX service letters that all they ever delivered was a 3:1. Hope this helps.

Thanks to everyone for their advice. I took Leonards advice and marked the Hardy Joint and turned the prop. It was 3:1 so I suspect that Jack was right, that this was the standard for Kitfox at the time.
Cheers
