I was ironing the fabric on an aileron, and noticed that it just didn't seem tight enough. I switched to my small hobby iron, and found that it wouldn't get hot enough to melt glue bumps. My digital thermometer read 165F on the small iron, and only about 220F on the large iron. I watched them for a while, and found that they would fluctuate every few minutes to a lower temperature. Both had been calibrated. It turned out to be an old wall recepticle- both rust, and carbon on the contacts. Spent $1.95 at the hardware store, and all calibrated temps returned to normal. Check your calibration at stages throughout the project, and any time instinct tells you something is wrong. I first thought it was a cheap foreign iron- I was wrong, it was my power supply.
