GPS experience

I’ve been contemplating the GPS issue myself. Both for cost and safety.
For Hobby VFR pilots ( like myself) one of the safety recommendations is the GPS be removable so you can take it home and “fly” the trip in your arm chair first. Less stress, more time to think, to plan, program, and re-plan. This is especially true if the plane is a rental.

Years ago I acquired a used Magellan 315, it had an upgradable aviation data base. When Magellan stopped supporting this unit a guy on the net figured out how to port the FAA aviation software and would provide free down loadable upgrades once a quarter. Magellan told the guy it was OK with them. It was a lot of work and about a year ago he stopped doing it. I’ve got the last addition on CD. Then another fellow, a KR2 pilot, figured out how to port the gps signal to his laptop and I could use the laptop to display a sectional chart with the gps tract. It was pretty slick and cheap.

Last Father’s Day I received a Garmin nuvi 205 for the car. It has road maps etc. Cost about 100 dollars at Sam’s club. It can be connected to the laptop by USB2 connects. It has a nice bright moving map. Touch screen control and lots of other really nice features. A bet a similar one with an aviation data base would cost ten times that much. I am looking into the possibility of finding a way to port aviation maps to the unit. I’ll let folks know how it turns out. Phill Hartig

Last year I ported US sectional charts onto Navigon 2100 automotive GPS. It worked like a charm as a GPS backup. Also had flight calculator on it as well.
