Been searching through the threads and can't find this but what is the actual cost of a replacement Housai, and who are the dealers or sources in the US who can get them?
According to the Red Star cost calculator, it's estimated at $15k.

Hey Pete,
There are a few sources for the Housai. There are some private party sellers with used engines. These engines used to be able to be had for $5K....those days are long gone. Even a mid-time used engine is going to bring closer to $10K. Caveat Emptor, of course. The only guy I know brining in engines from China that I would trust at this point is Doug Sapp. I'm guessing he'll pipe in here, but a good 0 SMOH is going to run you $17K-20K. Prices are only going up. I always recommend to people if they are going to fly a lot and plan to be in this game awhile, buying a good spare engine and sticking it in the corner is like money in the bank.
Incidentally, I have a 17 SNEW with original Chinese log books (rare) that's I'd be willing to part with for $17,500.
For a cost estimate on a replacement motor, I'd recommend using $20K. Still a great deal compared to a comparable flat motor....
Radials forever!
Cheers,
Barry

Pete,
I put the cost calculator spreadsheet together. The costs in there were
approximate about 4 years ago. The sheet was meant to give people the
opportunity to adjust their "CJ/Yak" costs based on their own assumptions.
The cost of a new Housai might be twice that as I've not seen many NEW
Housai's advertised.
Randy

Thanks, that calculator is very helpful in just remembering what to account for!
The other thing is I'm getting wildly conflicting descriptions of how long these motors are good for. I know the Chinese use 600TBO, but others have said that 2,000 would be doable with the right maintenance and care. What do you folks think?

Pete,It has been my experience that barring some "operator error" such as prop strike or hyd lock a 0 time since 1st overhaul HS6A with a 10 micron oil filter is installed should make the 2000 hour mark.
FYI a 1st overhauled engine has 500 to 600 hours on the bottom end and 0 on the top. So if you run it 2000 hours it actually has 2500 to 2600 hours on the bottom end. Main and rod bearings are not normally replaced at overhaul unless the mechanic deems that they will not run to the next overhaul which is normally 500 to 600 hours.
Always Yakin,
Doug

18K, for a 0 time 1st overhaul. 2nd and 3rd overhauls are lower priced, but I try not to buy them. I have two coming in about 60 days.
