All-
Just shot this lousy picture of the backyard through the screen window in the kitchen. That's a bona fide Pennsylvania wild turkey hen, and the arrows point to some of the poults, who are little brown fluffballs about as big as your fist.

Never mind that... are they oven worthy? Let the PETA flames begin.

Ed and all-
By PETA I take it you're referring to People promoting the Eating of Tasty Animals. T-shirts are available- look online.
Actually, they're more airworthy than oven worthy. For as big as they are, it's amazing how fast they fly and how agile they are dodging the trees in our thick woods. Look just past where I mow- they boogie through that stuff at up to 35smph for short distances. They can also run as fast as a deer for short distances.
On the other hand, one of the favorite foods of the wild turkey is bugs. That's where turkey scratches come from- they're digging up the forest floor looking for grubs, slugs, and beetles. As the saying goes, you are what you eat.
I just think it's cool they stopped by my place. I've lived up here for 30 years and haven't seen wild turks for 25.

Hey Bill:

Isn't it nice to see turkeys somewhere besides the airport?

I spent the fourth of July weekend at my Friend Sam Welch's place in Castle Valley, Utah, outside Moab. Castle Valley is named for Castle Rock (see pic) which is a spire where back in the 60's they helocoptered a Chevrolet and model atop it and made a commercial with the MixMaster circling around it filming. Old enough to remember that?

Anyway, it's very lush in the Valley floor where Sam's place is. Attached ia a pic of a group of Wild Turkeys that live there. The pic shows five, there were usually six around. We saw them everyday. Also saw Mule deer does with twin fawns and one with triplets!

A few weeks ago in my backyard was a family of Gambels' quail. They had 9 chicks. Three days later they were down to 4. I saw a Kestrel grab one of them. Nature can be very tough, but baby Kestrels have to eat too. The attached pic shows the four left, look close and see their "topknots" as already growing. Haven't seen them since.

To make this not off topic, I am sending a pic of Sam's metalwork. We bend metal and drill holes. Now here is a metalworker! He is a World Class firearms engraver and has done work for the finest gunmakers in the world. Not many mistakes allowed in this work. Have to be an Artist to boot.

Regards,

Randy, Las Vegas

Randy-
I don't know if sharing pictures of anything that flies in your locale is really off topic, and I assume the "Turkeys at the airport" refers to idiots who step on "Do not step" areas of your project.
The quail/Kestrel anecdote is most interesting. A couple of years ago we had a pair of large birds that I had to research to find out they were Merlins. Leave it to Rolls-Royce to name their engines after birds of prey.
What I want to see from our Texas listers is a mama armadillo walking across their lawn with their little armored vehicles. Instant Christmas card!
