|
|
Gentlemen:
I fly an Allegro 2000 with a 912 UL engine. I have had the engine since new. It now has 228 hours on it. I use only Mobil 1 Racing 4T oil. I have changed oil and filter regularly every 50 hours. I also have examined the used filter at each oil change. I have had no problems, but I finally decided to have an oil analysis done. When the results came back I looked at the numbers and said to myself, “OK, now how do I interpret the results? I don’t know what the results mean. The lab simply gives the results without drawing any conclusions. I am posting the results below hoping some of you guys can give me some insight into what they mean as far as “do I have a problem or not?”
Engine Hours 228
Oil Life 53 hours
Viscosity (at) 40°C 41 CST
TAN 5.00 mgKOH/g
Iron 20.4 ppm
Aluminum 6.0 ppm
Chromium 0.5 ppm
Molybdenum 77.9 ppm
Copper 5.9 ppm
Lead 1.3 ppm
Tin 0.8 ppm
Nickel 0.9 ppm
Silver 0.2 ppm
Vanadium <0.1 ppm

Silicon 4.0 ppm
Sodium 7.0 ppm
Boron 190 ppm
Phosphorus 1267.3 ppm

Hi Hugh,
You should use a company that is used to doing Rotax analysis. They will have good comparative info and direction. Most of the time if everything is normal that is all they say.
This company does lots of Rotax and I believe Lockwood Aviation sends their oil to these guys, too.

Hugh,
The primary value of a the regular oil analysis is in comparing the current to previous ones. Generally, oil analyses are done at every (or every other) oil change. Assuming your engine is currently in excellent shape and there is no reason to doubt that with the care you are giving it, once you have a baseline analysis, comparison with subsequent analyses by the same lab preferably will enable you to see if a particular metal content is getting much greater. With this information and knowing what various parts of the engine are made of, will help you anticipate potential problems and identify their source before they become a flight risk.
So for your first analysis, the absolute values are not particularly informative unless you know the "normal range" of similar engines. This is the value of having it done by a lab that knows Rotax engines and can give you the normal ranges for your engine type.

Hugh,
Can you tell us what lab you sent your oil sample to, so that we may
avoid that one.
They did not happen to tell you that they knew what to do about
Rotax four strokes did they?
Different labs usually draw up their own calibrations and normal range
curves, but perhaps Kev might have insight on what the factory
considers OK?

The one I posted has a long history with Rotax. Lockwood uses them. You will always have some findings in any oil sample from any engine. If you get one back for a Rotax that says within "normal limits" then there really isn't anything to report. They will also want to compare at least two samples for your specific engine so you need to send another one at the 50 hr. oil change.
