You did right to jump them. It is not hard to learn how to mentally
envision where everybody else in the area is at, if they are giving good
position reports as they enter or leave airport traffic areas. But the
idiot Lone Ranger mentality who blunders silently along contributes
nothing to the mix. Good on ya.
Reminds me of a situation years ago, working West Radar at TRI, was
watching two VFR's flying a heading to intercept each other, neither one
talking to ATC, or asking for traffic advisories, and one of them was at
WAFDOF (wrong altitude for direction of flight). As the targets merged,
at the same altitude, both of them began (obviously) pushing their ident
buttons.
DOH!

Yah, we have some like that in this area, too. With 3 airports in 30 miles,
(PSP, UDD, TRM) all busy, and 1 with a tower, (PSP) these guys are a menace
to themselves and everyone else around them. I'm not sure what their
mindset is, but it's an aggravation in busy airspace. Personally, I check
in with every airport as I near it, even to pass by, and listen to all
traffic as I go.
I rode with a couple of those guys to the annual Chapter 1 fly-in at Flabob
a couple of years ago, and it was spooky. They take it as a point of pride
not to use the radio, and as we got deeper into that very heavy traffic, I
finally raised hell from the back seat and insisted they get on the air.
They were upset, and I'm still not being spoken to. Sorry, but I just don't
agree with them. Lar. Do not Archive.
