After 520 hours on my nitrided 20/20 crank I took my engine apart to check it out. The main bearings looked new still with no scratches or copper showing. They still had the aluminum sheen like they do out if the box. I was quite surprised. My plane now sport the 100 hp IFB (integral front bearing) that I designed for Aeromax Aviation. More data later but the stock nitrided crank should be just fine for that application. I would use our new rear starter alt setup though.

Nice as it would be, from what I've gathered, the additional expense isn't justified by the way I fly. And, with a nice light prop, you won't likely put a lot of side load on the crank nose. There are so many out there flying for years without it, that I feel pretty safe as is. (my bone frame has been subjected to so much cumulative overstress that my design load is now +- 2G, and my ultimate load is +-3G)
