I am building a 650 and I am almost finished the Fuslage and would like to put it on wheels. My question is what is the difference between the 601XL gear and the 650 gear. The way Zenith packaged the componet kits diferently between the 650 and the 602XL you can no longer just order the gear kit but have to order the Finishing Kit.What other options that might be available?
Asd you can tell a first time builder.

Looking here http://zenithair.com/zodiac/xl/design-gear.html
There doesn't seem to be any difference. Zenith is pretty good about sending what you need even if it isn't a complete compoant kit.

There are two other options that come to mind.
1st, the aluminum gear made by Grove? or someone like that. It is made
(IIRC) from 7075 aluminum which allows them to cut about 13 lbs off the
gear, and (for a few bucks) you can get it gun drilled to pass the brake fluid.
2nd is the composite gear that is sold by Aircraft Spruce. It is lighter by
quite a bit. I don't know if the catalog lists the gear that is rated for
the 1320 lb gross aircraft, but Spruce can order it.
I don't know what the costs are.
