|
|
Here is a technical question for you: Can NAS bolts be used with AN nyloc nuts.
One bolt hole on my spar plate connection was reamed slightly to large by about 1/64". I don't really wish to go up to the next size AN bolt even though it is allowable per Zenith. My plan is to use a close tolerance oversize NAS bolt in lieu of the AN bolt. I have researched and found that the NAS bolt is actually stronger than AN bolts, however due to the critical nature of this connection, I want to make sure that I don't overlook any details.
BTW in the case that anyone else finds themselves in the same situations oversize bolts are extremely expensive, and are extremely hard to find.
Try 50-70 dollars a piece for an AN 6-11. Yes that is EACH bolt 50-70 dollars.

Let me correct my post above... They do not make oversize AN bolts, however they do make oversize NAS bolts albeit all but impossible to find. i.e.
NAS6606-11X
660 is the series and means that it is a close fit, 6 means it is a 3/8 bolt, 11 means it is 11/16 and the X is the IMPORTANT part meaning it is 1/64" oversize. There is also a Y designation which means it is 1/32" oversize.
Take your time while reaming. I'll still be discussing this further with Zenith to make sure that everything is A-OK but any input regarding the compatibliity between NAS and AN bolts and nuts is appreciated.
Thanks

I got some AN-6 Bolts from Aircraft Spruce for a lot less than
that. I don't remember the exact price, but it was probably around $1.00

First I should specify this is for a 601 HD.
Second, an AN 6 fastener is anywhere from .0363-.375 in. or + 0.000/-.012.... Problem here is my plate, actual reamed hole dimension, which I intended to ream to .375in is actually slightly ovaled with the greatest dimension measuring approximately .389 inches.
So, to ensure a tight fit the only other option I can come up with is use a 1/64" oversize bolt, or use an AN7. An AN7, though acceptable is at the very very limits of allowable, since the edge distance now becomes critical...
Yes, a standard AN6 bolt should be a dollar or less, and AN7 should be a dollar or less. an NAS6606-11 should be about 3 or so dollars and BUT an NAS6606-11"X" goes for about fifty bucks.
