Lynn,
Built a separator, 5 vane 6" tall and insulated it.Last 2 hrs have collected 1"of moisture in the catch bottle but no oil.Now I can keep tabs on oil consumption.Finished a 4 vane 4" tall separator that I will install this weekend. They look weird but it's effective.I'll just keep making it smaller until it can't trap the oil. Here's a picture.

Thanks for the update, Gary. I removed my "puke jar" as I like to
call it, last week during my most recent 25-hour oil change. It had
collected 5 oz of oil and a *very* little bit of water...maybe 1/2 oz
out of that 5 oz. Then, because my puke jar/collection bottle is
translucent, I calibrated it at 2 oz intervals, and made marks on the
side. Now when I have the cowl off, I can make a note that at such-
and-such hours, I had collected "XX" oz of oil. This will help me
monitor engine wear, oil performance, etc.

During that 25 hours of operation, I only added 6 oz of new oil to
top off the oil sump.

I have used oil collection bottles in race bikes, they turn up to 15 thousand RPM and oil collection is still as simple as a small plastic bottle. Oil will drop out of the vapour as long as you can slow the air down, I'm confused about the requirement for vanes and traps, are you flying inverted?

Dave,
Not intentionally. On my early 2200a Jabiru requests that I run the oil level at the add mark,to reduce pushing it out the vent. The add mark is 3/16" from the end of the stick.Once it's below the stick it's hard to guess how much to add to get it back to that level,so it's been see sawing between to much and not enough with the excess ending up in the catch can.I'm just trying to eliminate the loss out of the vent so I can get a realistic handle on basic consumption. The separator just forces the vapor to make 4 or 5 90 degree turns and the oil drops out of the airstream onto the vanes and runs back into the sump.Unconfused?

Thanks,G.Aman Kolb MK-3C 450hrs mostly rightside up.

I guess so, I won't try to hasten your reduction in complexity. Is there a longer dipstick available?

I read a good suggestion on one of the Jabiru groups that I
read....on top of the dipstick knob, you can see where the stick is
flush with the top of the knob. Simply drive the stick down through
the knob about 1/4"--3/8" , and you will have a longer dipstick...it
worked for me. On my stick at leaast, the knob is just "cast" around
the smooth stick. If they made one that was
knurled inside the knob, the knob might split when you drive it down,
but I doubt that Jabiru would go to the trouble/expense of another
machining operation on such a simple device as the dipstick.
