I balance my own 912uls so today I tried to do a 914. We followed the same procedure as the 912 but ended up with it being balanced at 1800 and 3700 up to 4500 rpm. We didn't go above 4500 on the ground. There was a difference of 10 or so on the differential gages in between 1800 and 3700 rpm then it evened out. Is there a problem with one or the other carb?

Hi Rich,

The 1800 should be at idle and set with the idle adjustment screw. When you get up to your 3700 then that is adjusted with the bowden cable. They can be different, but you should be able to set the idle and then bring up the throttle and dial that vacuum in, too. When done you should have them on the gages as balanced at idle and at whatever rpm you chose to balance at higher rpms. Sometimes carbs are easy to balance and sometimes they are a PITA. Some times the needles on the gages stay together well and sometimes they lag just a little, but they should settle fairly quickly to be equal. Every carb balance can be a little different. Every 912 engine should have the carbs balanced at 100 hours or the annual which ever comes first. They will always be out of balance just do to wear and tear and a few other factors. This procedure is a must for the health and longevity of the engine. Once you do it a couple of times it gets easier and you will know exactly which carb to adjust over the other to make your work faster.

So long as they both balanced your good to go.
