I have a Dynon D10-A and I bought the external compass module (wish I'd selected the "internal" option because it was a lot of work to install).Â
Will a DAR require that I also have a whiskey compass?
Should I have a whiskey compass anyway just for redundancy?

If all you want to do is VFR then the dynon is fine. but if you want to fly IFR then you will need to have a back-up whiskey compass. Reason?? In the operating limitations that will be issued at the time of certification one of the paragraphs will read: "Unless appropriately equipped in accordance with 91.205 for night and/or IFR flight C aircraft is restricted to day VFR." The first paragraph in both 91.205 (c) and (d) states that the instruments in paragraph (b) are required.
I can get a lot more in depth about this if you would like but I think the above is enough for what you want.

In talking to other builders -- some DARs do and some don't. I put a relatively inexpensive Whiskey compass in mine --a pegasus (http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/inpages/sirs_compass.php).It seems to work just fine.
good luck

What am I missing? Where in 91.205 is a backup whiskey compass required.? Paragraph (b) (3) requires a magnetic direction indicator. Can't this be an electronic magnetic direction indicator?
Regards,
George

91.205 (b) (3) states... "Magnetic direction indicator." Why is the built-in compass in the dynon not considered a "magnetic direction indicator"?

I went through this with the Des Moines FSDO (not DAR) about three weeks ago. They thought I needed a “magnetic direction indicator” that worked if I lost electrical power, and wouldn’t accept my Dynon remote compass. I respectfully asked where that was in the regulations that stated it had to work without electrical power. After several hours, they called me back and said it was not required but “highly recommended”. So I went to Walmart and got an $8 compass and stuck it on dash. He was happy and signed the paperwork.Â
Obviously your mileage may vary, but I agree 91.205 only says three words – “Magnetic direction Indicator” – it says nothing about how it is displayed, or the fact that it needs to work without electrons.
Good Luck!

I remember reading it as a "magnetic direction indicator" and the magnetometer that feeds direction indications to the Dynon in my IFR RV-7 meets that description.

Go to Walmart and get a $1.99 stick on compass in the kid's craft's department and stick it on your panel. You will meet the requirement. Nowhere does it say permanately mounted or expensive.

I think it does say somewhere you need a correction card.

That is the part that you will have ot work out with the DAR. I agree with you in that I consider a Dynon a magnetic directional indicator but there are otheres that don't agree within the FAA and the DARs. As has been stated elsewhere it is the electrical part that gets in the way. Personally I got the backup battery option on my Dynon and that was the end of the discussion. But I also got a SIRS compass and installed it just in case everything really went to sh**.

Backups to worthless whiskey compass in no particular order
1) GPS track
2) Backup GPS track
3) Directional gyro
4) Sun and roads
5) Sectional
6) Sheer blind luck at finding an airport (serendipity?)
7) ATC vectors

When my RV was signed off by the DAR it didn't have a compass (GRT system). It did have a blank compass correction card. The DAR said he would let it go, but if the airplane was going to be used for Part 135 ops it would need a compass. So if I ever use my RV for Part 135 operations I guess I will go to Walmart and get a compass.

I've got the battery backup in the Dynon and I consider it my backup to the main EFIS (Blue Mountain). Both have independent and separately located Magnetometers. Since I aligned both instruments to be exactly NSE&W and did the calibration on both per specs, I printed up a compass card and posted it. ie N=360 , S = 180 etc. You folks see anything wrong with my logic here? It all works and seems safe to me. But I'm just the pilot.

I've got a Dynon 100 (with battery backup), a 396 in a gizmo mount, an ADI with gps (gives track and has battery backup), an auto pilot with internal "gyros", a whiskey compass, and if all else fails my iphone has a compass that works pretty good if you hold it away from the rest of the electronic stuff. It is a wonder that I can find my way around on the ground.
