I have a pair of eyeball vents installed in the panel connected to the  

NACA vents on the side of the canopy. They help some but didn't  

provide enough cooling on hot sunny days. I installed a pair of Vista  

Vents from ACS last summer and these work really well. I still have to  

prop the canopy open while taxiing. I also have a Koger sunshade  

installed that helps shield the cabin from the sun.

Hi, Larry.



Rich Vetterli used some really nice, large round vents in his canopy that not only snap out into the airstream, but also covered up a canopy crack quite nicely!  I don't have a picture handy in the archive, but I'll keep looking.  I think he got them from ACS.



I'm using a pair of the really nice Aveo ball vents that fit neatly right in the outlet of the NACA duct.  The 1.75" inch sleeve size is almost a perfect fit, it nests right in without need of much of a shim.  A layer or two of gaffer's tape sealed them up well.

 I cut the hole with a Dremel.  It was fitted with a special Dremel attachment that has a center point and mounts the Dremel and cutter at a specific radius (Dremel part no. 678-01 Circle Cutter & Straight Edge Guide) The cutter was a tiny drum with spiral cutting edges.  I think the cutter is bit no. 194.  Worked like a charm !

 

 I used this same bit to do a whole lot of detailed aluminum cutting.  It will also work on thin steel, but wears out rather quickly.

Larry,



I  used two Plastic Eyeball Air Vents from ACS, $17.95 each in gray, 

black, white or beige.  These are connected to NACA vents on the side of 

the fuselage, per ZAC, and connected via scat tubing.  I installed a 120 

mm square 12 volt muffin/exhaust fan, with a metal finger guard on the 

rear of the baggage compartment.  The muffin fan is p/n 

707-GDA1238-12BB, cost is $20.12, Finger Guard is p/n 5912-LZ30, cost 

$5.55 from Mouser Electronics, www.mouser.com.



I live in South Texas, 20 miles from San Antonio, so have several HOT 

summers proof of concept experience.

Before engine start, canopy closed, turn on muffin/exhaust fan and point 

left eye ball vent at my face.  Slight  breeze.  Start engine, air is 

now blowing nicely on my face/upper body.  The air blowing on my face is 

probably 95 - 100 degrees but it still cools.  End of climb check list 

has:  Turn off exhaust fan.  Before landing checklist has:  Turn on 

exhaust fan.

Rich used a standard hole saw gently turned (slowly) by hand on warmed up plex, attacking it from both sides. It took awhile, but the results were pretty good.

These are also available at Home depot and Aircraft Spruce.

I have it chucked into a hand brace and turned it very carefully. I  

started on one side of the plexiglas and cut part way through and  

switched to the other side to finish it off. I did this on a warm day.

I saw Doug Dugger of Quality Sport Planes do the same in his XL canopy with the snap vent (). He lubes the cutter with WD-40 as I recall. Spruce p/n CC3251 or 05-01179.
