Came across this one while looking for something else. Got out the map and
measured from where I had landed on the beach of the Arctic Ocean, at the
site Will Rogers and Wiley Post were killed in 1935, 12 miles south of
Barrow, Alaska, to the nearest coast line of Russia. From my left wing tip
to Russia is 450 miles southwest.
If I had had the courage and capability to fly the Alaskan coast southwest
to Wales, AK, I would have been 50 miles from Russia. To get to Wales from
Barrow is 480 miles. To fly to Anchorage from Wales would have been 639
miles, with very few gas pumps in between.
Hard to comprehend how big Alaska is, and how much complete wilderness there
is up there, until you get out there and fly it in a little airplane.

John h,
Is Wales the point from which Sarah Palin said she could see Russia from? Wow! You flew to Barrow! That's almost out of this world. Great job. Great pics. You can see the curvature of the earth, errrr, I mean the ocean.

Bill V/Gang:
I don't know about Sarah.
She may also have been on Diomede Island. Big Diomede is Russian territory and Little Diomede (or Diomede) is US. They are about 2.5 miles apart.
My little MKIII has been north of Point Barrow, northernmost point of the North American Continent in 2001 and 2004.
Was in Deadhorse/Prudhoe Bay 1994, 2001, and 2004.
The old guys on the List know all about those flights, but the newer folks may not realize that one of their own has done some cross country flying, in the same old MKIII.
Kolbs have a lot more capability than Homer ever dreamed of, and most Kolb owners and flyers too.
Making preliminary plans to fly back to Alaska next summer in the same airplane at the ripe old age of 71, if I can still do it and have fun while I am at it. I had planned to do it this summer, but things did not work out the way I wanted them to.
I'd like to fly the west coast of Alaska, but that is a very difficult flight in most any kind of airplane. I'll have to do a lot of study to see if I can make it on available fuel. Fuel will be the biggest problem, followed by weather.
Take care,
john h

John just curious if you flew the Al-Can up and back or did you fly the coastline one way?
When I flew the PA28 Arrow up and back a few years ago, went Port Angeles WA, Ketchikan, Juneau, Kodiak, Homer..then Fairbanks around the back side home.. Spectacular scenery, surely one the most cherished trips of my life!! I would love to do this again in the future....I appreciate your inspiration. Got a lot of building ahead first.
I hope this next trip you can mount a camera and capture for all who have not experienced the magnificence of this incredible place.
Cheers to all from London!

To much water and weather for a single engine VFR homebuilt experimental to fly the inside passage.
I have flown north and south, the Alaska Highway, Stewart-Cassiar Highway, Klondike Highway, Dempster Highway, and the Dalton Highway. Each highway is an adventure in itself.
Then...we (me and Miss P'Fer, my MKIII) have flown beyond the Dalton and the Dempster Highways to the northernmost point of the North American Continent at Point Barrow, Alaska, and Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territory, northernmost Eskimo Village on the North American Continent in Canada. Both places a long ways from Alabama.
Makes me tired thinking about it.
Couple photos, one north of Point Barrow looking south to the North American Continent, and the other is a aerial view of Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territory, Canada.

John's flights to Alaska still make me drool, always did. What grand adventures they must have been!I doubt anyone could see RUS from Wales, but when in Gambell, (St Lawrence I) we could see the mountains of the Chukchi peninsula. Got within 30 mi of the RUS coast, but in a Umiak, not an aircraft. No problem, everyone looks the same in parkas, natives & visitors alike.

John,
If you flew as far south as you did north, where could you have possibly been?

A quick map recon shows the northern border of Argentina, straight line distance of about 4,000 miles.

John,
And to think Charles Lindbergh flew almost that distance nonstop back in 1927. Wow!

Yes, it is truly amazing that Lindbergh was able to accomplish that flight.
He took off with 450 gallons of fuel, flew about 3500 miles, in 33 hours, 30 minutes. The aircraft had an ultimate range of 4000 miles.
2700 lbs of fuel is a heck of a load.
Here is a good web site for Lindbergh. I did realize, until I read it, but the Spirit of St Louis did a lot of flying after the record solo flight.
http://www.charleslindbergh.com/history/paris.asp
I could have done it on 233.3 gal in about 43 hours, if I could haul 1400 lbs of fuel.

Great photos John! Thanks for sharing them.
I was not so fortunate to have the blue skies I see in the photos.....
I couldn't agree more with your weather comment, even with forecasts, the weather always seemed worse than predicted and changed rapidly many times, especially on the West Coastal area. I certainly respect the folks that fly in this Region.
Alaska was my first experience where I was asked to "declare my option" on approach.... I scratched my head for a moment then humbled myself to ask, as I had no idea what the tower was asking. "Water, turf or concrete" was the response and concrete my choice.
Take care
