The reason that a flatter bottom surface on the nose cone is better for speed and economy is because the bottom surface surfs at cruise speed. The wider it is, the better it surfs and the induced drag created by the horizontal stab and elevator to hold the nose up is reduced due to the uplift force on the nose. Parasite or profile drag is usually less than induced drag. There is a limit to the benefit of fuselage strakes or flat bottom nose cones, but I do not know what it is. Vic Gibson (Mk III Classic)

Just a guess here, guys, since more surface area is more skin drag, but might the improvement have more to do with improving the air flow into the prop?

I prefer flying my original MKIII over any of the MKIIIx's.
