Hi all...
In a long sordid story I seem to have more Generator issues than I can cope with. Trying to keep it short, it goes as follows:
Aircraft 'A' is a 'factory overhauled' aircraft from China with a carbon pile type regulator. From the first engine run it has had a problem where the ammeter would randomly go from load to unload and back and the generator light would flicker accordingly. Brushes and springs checked out OK and the commutator was inspected and cleaned, but after checking them the generator would not come on line at all. I then flashed the generator and it returned to the original flickering problem.
(My method of flashing has been to disconnect the generator wiring to isolate the generator and then connect, from an external 24V source, the negative lead to the neg post on the generator and then the positive lead to the field terminal on the generator for approx 5 secs. If you slip off the positive terminal it certainly 'flashes'!)
We then tried another regulator with no effect and then another generator from a project aircraft that had been sitting around for some time with no effect. Flashing it as above did not help... the generator stayed firmly off line with no flickering.
Another generator from Aircraft 'B' (a currently flying aircraft) was then fitted and it causes the ammeter to peg out on the discharge side when the contacts are made and ultimately blows the main power fuse. it does this with both regulators.
Unfortunately once the generator was put back on the original aircraft ('B') it will now not come on line. Flashing it (as above) does nothing. This aircraft has a newer style regulation system with the big heat sink on the firewall and it would appear that for some reason the generator wiring is reversed from the wiring diagram as what the diagram says is the negative lead is painted with red paint and shows a residual current through it. Likewise, what the diagram says is the positive lead seems to go to earth!
Reversing the wiring seems to make no difference as the generator refuses to come on line.
I am now completely confused and out of ideas. Anyone out there care to comment???? Particularly on the 2nd aircraft for which I only removed and refitted the generator (initially!).

Chris,Do the easy stuff first, check the brushes and all wiring, especially where the wires connect to the voltage regulator (if you have the old style reg). Not normally a problem with the solid state regs as they have a cannon plug connection.
