Herb, I was looking at the construction. These don't appear to be the cheap chicom copies.

I'm confused regarding these clear screw together filters. In the past I have read on more than this list not to use them, stay away from them, to as much as your sure to crash and burn more or less. Apparently there are different brands and quality.
The question then becomes how to determine which is which. I was totally caught off guard and surprised when I read John Hauck was using them on the flights he has taken. I've read about more than a single incidence of these things coming unscrewed. Just recently the glass actually being plastic and deforming. John H, do you have a brand name and source for the ones your using. My self the Fram G1 has worked well for me, I think I will stay with it. Maybe the G1 will not support the flow rate you require for your big 4-stroke Rotax engine, but they have worked fine for me and my 447.

Had one of these on a Thruster ultralight. Gave no trouble at all was easy to clean. The thruster had a fiberglass fuel tank
and while the filter did take out most glass fiber there were a couple of times the engine did idle rough. The problem was glass fiber in the carburetors. I would not hesitate to use the glass filters again. My Kolb has a clear plastic filter that is easily checked and has given 400hrs trouble free service. We do not use ethanol based fuels in New Zealand {yet}. When we went to unleaded MO gas fuels we did have some problems with the new fuel eating some rubber seals and gaskets. But again no problem with the Rotax ,the same thing happened when we changed the make up of our diesel fuels some vehicles developed leaky fuel pumps and injector pumps .Hardly hear of the problem now so we either just get on and repair things or the problem was short lived and has gone away .

The 12.99 price appears to be fair...given that the web sites that I found do not include the spare filters..Herb

I believe that John is using an old one that he bought years ago, with he
original more robust center screw.
I'm using one too, on my UltraStar. Mine IS one of the cheap manufacture
later ones. I check it for tightness during my prelight, and it's
supported on both ends with zip ties through short tubing standoffs to the
frame. No trouble so far (~50 hours).

jerb/Gang:
I think my filter is a Purolator. I could be wrong since I bought it in 1984. Used it on all three of my Kolbs.
Removed my glass tube, after it cracked the first night, and replaced with a similar size piece of 6061 tubing. I think it is .058"X1".
Takes a minute to pull it apart to check the filter. John Williamson had one he flew with the glass tube, but I feel better with the aluminum tube. On the other hand, all my antique tractors have glass sediment bowls. Only time they break is when I drop them on something hard. My Kubota tractors use plastic sediment bowls.
I was in Walmart and O'reilly's Auto Parts yesterday. Walmart has the filter under the Atwood brand name and O'reilly's has theirs under some unknown name. Walmart's was less than $9.00 with a single element. O'reilly's had replacement elements, 3 for nearly $5.00.

What I saw in the picture was the knurled nut used to to tighten the filter element against the shoulder on the center stud which appears to be round. The cheap chicom units just tighten the ends on to the cast center piece which twists the filter when tightening.

If you use these, it's best to safety wire the inside
tube to keep the round "nut" from vibrating loose,
backing out and covering the inlet hole to the right.
There was an advisory out years ago & I've seen it happen.
There are also cheap imitations out there that look
just like the good ones.
I still use this kind of filter, as long as the "O-rings" are
fresh & you don't crank it down, it seems to work fine.

Kirk S/Gang:
If it was mine, I'd replace the plastic tube with a piece of 6061 tubing, if
the rest of the filter looks like it will be serviceable and reliable.

> Rick it looks good here . Does it show ok to anyone besides me? John, I

Kirk S/Gang:
I am very careful not to overtighten the caps. On one occassion I did.
Result was the end of the tube pulled past a round O ring causing a leak.
Some replacement element kits come with square cut and some round O rings.
Usually the square cut is less Murphy proof. However, the round O ring
seals work fine as long as I do not over tighten.
I think the aluminum tube works best with square cut ends, rather than
sanding and rounding. I polish the tube on a buffing wheel once in a blue
moon, but am careful not to hit the square edges of each end to prevent
rounding them off.
My filter uses a circular thumb nut to secure the nylon element. I snug
this up tight by hand. I have never used safety wire on it and never had a
problem of this nut loosening up.
Takes a couple minutes to inspect the filter by removal and disassembly, and
the aluminum tube gives me the satisfaction it ain't gonna break in flight.
