I ordered my first 1,000 rivets from Zenith. I see that Aircraft Spruce
also has the same rivet, with the same Avdel part number for half the cost of
Zenith. Has anyone ordered these rivets to see if they are the same. Every
detail of them seems to be the same.

Thank you for the information

Larry

Check the archives for the complex history of this topic. Basically you need
to be certain that your batch has been tested. Do this yourself or let
Zenith do it.

I could read all day in the archives. Yes, this is probably the way to do
it, but I did not belong to the group then and there may be some more insight
on the subject now. I would like a little more information on the testing of
the rivets. Wouldn't all the rivets that come from Avdel be same and would
they not have thier own quality control department? I will search the
archive as directed, but would still like some information from anyone willing to
share it.

Thanks,

Larry

Larry,

Sorry if I came off as annoyed, just can't find time to give a complete
answer at the moment. Just do a search for "avex made in China" or
something you'll get the info. Basically Textron has begun making our rivets
in China (as opposed to UK) as of late. Jury is still out on reliability of
Quality. I'm still using UK rivets that CH recommends. When it comes time
I'll test as per Newsletter--can't remember which # (maybe someone else will
chime in on that) diagram. The newsletter # may be in the archives as well.

If someone has this Newsletter and scanner, I really want to get
that article by email for educational purposes.

No, I haven't anykind problem with my rivets, which are NOT avdel
avex (I use much stronger POP rivets from Emhart, even I have to use
many different lenghts of them), but I'm curious, how THEY do all tests.

Murray, this question has popped up before, using solid rivets will only
strengthen the area in which you use and will not strengthen the design.
The speed gain in an 801 will be less then 0.2mph but you will add
another 1000hrs to your build time and need a partner for most of the
process. The choice is ultimately yours but I really can't fathom any
reason or desire to solid rivet a STOL aircraft. In fact it makes little
sense to solid rivet any design that fly's at less then 200mph.

Murray,

I am building an 801. I might use countersunk rivets on my fuselage sides
just for looks. Although when I get to them, I really will probably use
"pop" rivets. I have used both kinds on other projects and the only reason I
can see to use them on an 801 is for looks. If you use the domed head driven
rivets, you end up with the same appearance. So, since there is no
advantage, strengthwise, do what ever you want. My opinion is, it's your
plane, do what you want.

On a slow plane like the 801 (and I doubt it would make hardly any
difference on a 601XL either) I can't see any reason other than
aesthetics for going for solid rivets.

They take a LOT! more time to set (and some skill...larger scew up
factor), needs lots of expensive tools (buy an ex RV builder dinner for
him and his Wife!) and need access to both sides of the rivet.

Its up to you if this is worth it to you...For me it would not.

I assume you can drop down one size if using solid rivets...I.e an AN4
pop rivet would be replaced with an AN3 C/s rivet...after you have
dimpled both parts of course. This would make it a lot easier.

Brad Maynard down in Texas is building an 801 and he is using bucked rivets in most of his plane. Look for his email address on the "builders on the web" site in the ZAC 801 section. He and his wife were out here in Jackson Hole last fall and I gave them both a ride in my 801 thrill show...... They are good poeple..

On a off topic note....

I have to agree. I actually found riveting to be an enjoyable job with my
pneumatic riveter. Even the hand riveter is satisfying to use. Also using
the standard blind rivets is much quicker and there are quite a few on the
801!

I don't know why you would want to, but I don't see any reason you couldn't use bucked rivets. I'm not an engineer, but I would be a little cautious installing the rivets flush with countersinking. The tensile strength of the joint could be affected. The tensile strength may be limited as much by the thin skins we use as by the actual rivet strength, so a bucked flush rivet may be no stronger than a pulled flush rivet in tension. It may even be weaker than a domed pulled rivet.

Hi Murray,

I'm building a Zodiac Xl 601 all with flush head rivets.
It's hard, but it's getting beautiful.
The hardest thing was the body and the tail.
The wing were easier.
I built a dimple machine and it helped me a lot.
I'll send you some pictures of teh Zodiac.

Best regards,

The aircraft designer intended pulled rivets; thus the numerous specs in the plans for a specific pitch. I imagine that you'll do a lot more work driving rivets instead of pulling them without a lot of added benefit. No offence intended ... but if you doubt the designer, maybe you aught to look for another plane. Just one man's opinion.
