Good morning, everyone. Can any of you recommend any books, or
opinion, for epoxi'ing the joints for the ribs to front/rear spars
and what size of filets need to be worked in? Some of the pictures
I've seen look like the epoxy is left in whatever manner it was
applied. I want to make nice clean filets but don't know how large
to make them. 'Preciate it. John Reinking/Woodinville, WA

Hi John,

I built in 1993 and am building again from a kit started in 1992. The guy
that built my present wings used the epoxy so that the fillets are between
1/4 and 3/8" inch radius. I am happy with that. In the old days when we
were using the 3M structural adhesive, we wet a finger and formed the
fillet. Keep in mind that the epoxy might be a bit thin with a tendency to
run, so use the cotton flox until it is stiff enough to ramain in place. On
one of my old applications, I didn't use enough flox so had to run out into
the garage every thirty minutes or so and clean up the sags. If finally set
OK and the fillets were smooth throughout.

I stuck my wing bits together last winter.
It's probably the biggest epoxy job of your life so a little planning will guarantee good results. Start in the morning, use bright work lights, do it alone (unless your helper is an expert). The best book on the subject is the kitfox wing manual. The only problems I had was running out of latex gloves and 2 oz. syringes. I cut back the bristles of a 1/2" epoxy brush and brushed a band on the spars and slid the ribs over top. You will encounter areas where the tip of the syringe doesn't reach so you'll have to push the epoxy into place with whatever finger works best. I dipped my finger into a cup of slightly soapy water to keep the epoxy from sticking. When your hands get mucked up...change gloves! Other essentials for me were; a box of tongue depressors, paper mixing cups, alcohol and paper towel to clean off excess epoxy and an organic vapor mask. Hope this helps you.

Built my model II in '91 and was a little confused about this subject. By shear chance, I happened to visit the Kitfox booth (at) Oshkosh that year and they had a half-built wing on display. The fillets on it were twice as wide as the few I'd done (at) the time...probably a good inch across.

So, I went home and ordered some more of the 3M structural adhesive and cotton flox and made them all that wide. They still look good today as if I'd just put them on yesterday.
