Have any of you taken a handheld GPS and used it to drive a small
external monitor ( like the kind used for backseat displays for dvd
players? Have an old Lowrance 500 and am wondering if it could be
used to display on a larger separate monitor (6-7"). Any
thoughts? Thanks fellas. John/Woodinville, WA

Portable devices don't usually use any kind of standard interface to talk to its own internal display so you can't just tap into it and route it to an external display. The maker of the device must build in extra circuitry to produce some kind of standard external signal output. It would be an extra cost for a feature that most people wouldn't use so they don't usually bother. I took a look at the specifications for the Lowrance 500 and it doesn't mention anything like that so I think you're out of luck.

In a perfect world, it could, John. But not in this one.
I collaborate to the PocketFMS software which gives a moving map and flight planner on small devices like PocketPC and carNav with GPS. It's hell! Each device has its own way to do things, own operative sytem, Windows Mobile, Windows CE, etc. Everyone is trying to get all the others to adopt their standard, they want to be the new rulers of the world. Even here, in Norway, they have started with a pocket TV. It works on a system that is only used by three providers, here in Norway. You can't use it anywhere else in the world. Needless to say; I am not buying that stuff.
Years ago, I asked a good friend who is also the director for JVC Norway why the hi-fi industry can't get around to standard types of cables. He answered: Well, we make money selling hi-fi equimpment but we also like to make money selling cables.
Cheers,
