Do it the simple way and buy a USB plug in GPS for a notebook. Both
work fine and are reasonably priced. One thing to remember is If you
laptop has a hard drive vs flash memory it will be pretty easy to
destroy the HD. causes are head to disk clearances reduced due to
altitude and vibration both causing HD crash. The best setup I have
seen was a very inexpensive laptop wrapped in foam padding and
stuffed under the seat, then the guy had a modest sized LCD display
that he mounted on the panel. I thought he was taking risk for the HD
, but he said he had no issues yet.
The main issue is will the USB GPS have the features you desire?

Have any of you taken a handheld GPS and used it to drive a small
external monitor ( like the kind used for backseat displays for dvd
players? Have an old Lowrance 500 and am wondering if it could be
used to display on a larger separate monitor (6-7"). Any
thoughts? Thanks fellas. John/Woodinville, WA
