Jeff, 4 D cells is 4.8 volts long term, you'll need twice that many to get 9.6. Why not go to one of the battery suppliers and see if there is a larger capacity unit that fits your camera and gives the use time you want. $time$ thing and no worries about charging, connecting, weight, etc.
