hello all. I pulled my wings off this weekend and trailered my plane to the paint shop. I had to cut the fuel lines, wires for strobes, and the pitot tubing.

What sort of fitting should I use when I re-connect the pitot tubing?

I see also that Zenith has a riveter that has a special domed head on it. Do I need to buy this riveter or can I use the one I have? (A4 blind rivets)

As always, thanks for your help.

Ernest, Zenith aircraft use a modified rivet puller nose piece to pull the rivets. The rivets start out as the countersunk (flush) style rivet and then the concave riveter nosepiece pulls the head into a low profile dome. You do not have to purchase the whole riveter from Zenith. You can purchase a riveter at your local hardware store and send the nose pieces to Zenith and have them machined. I think Zenith charges something like ten dollars for this service.

If all you are planning on doing is maintenance type work, a hand puller might be all that is needed. If you have a bunch of rivets to pull, you should look into getting a pnuematic puller. Harbor Freight sells an adaquate one for around $40.00 that I have heard many builders are quite satisfied with.

As for splicing the pitot tube line, I would recommend a fitting that goes on the outside of the tubing rather than the inside. Something like a compression nut coupler. I'm not exactly sure what kind of tubing you are using for your pitot so cannot give exact part numbers or sources. If you do end up having to use an internal type of splice(inside the tubing), try using very thin wall aluminum or brass tubing so that there is not much of a restriction created at the splice.
