Hey guys, I have my 750 plans now but my question is to the guys who own and are flying 701’s with O200’s in them. Please email me off list

I had contemplated using an O-200 and did the math - looking at minimum 220lbs installed weight with the B&C starter (240lbs is the basic weight of a fully equipped O-200) also I was not comfortable with the amount of vibration the heavy iron can induce on my 701 airframe, based on 12 years of running one in a C150 and the number of tail attach cracks happening with 912S installs. It may have been just my engine that was a bit shaky - but the Jabiru 2200 smoothness in comparison is like night and day.

Every time I see a C-85 I feel I might have missed the ideal engine, given just had to replace all exhaust valves and cylinder base nuts at 300hrs due to what I consider design deficiencies - not maintenance issues.

I'm aware of one report of the O-200 faring not so well, ref. below, and thought there was a similar incident in the US last year or so

Why do you feel the C-85 to be ideal as apposed to the O-200

The C-85 is slightly less capacity so should be smoother (less valve overlap too) does not have a starter motor or much else for that matter so is light enough to qualify for fitting to a CH701 meeting the design rules DS10141E, which must be met in most countries that allow advanced ultralight / microlight class aircraft. There is a note in every set of plans for the CH701 that states what hp and installed weight the powerplant may be, before it falls outside the requirements of the design rules.

To operate as an amateur- built class for me requires keeping full PPL licence and A&P certified maintenance, in which case it would have been as expensive to run as a Cessna.

Admittedly the O-200 is more plentiful and if compared without the electrics weight it comes in about 3 lbs heavier than C-85

Ralph there are several O200 powered 701's. I am not sure what country you
are in but in the USA a O200 doesn't mean you need a A&P at all nor a PPL.
The plane still meets the requirements here for a Sport Pilot to fly it.
Also as a amateur built the builder or owner can work on it regardless of
what it is, the only restriction is if you did not build it you can not do
the Annual Condition Inspection. As a private pilot and A&P I assure you
this information is correct.

Had me going there I had to look it up... thought you were saying that the C-85 was hand prop only. I get about 195 lbs for the -8 model.

you're right kevin I should have checked more closely. But turning to page 16 of the manual you see that the -8 engines have no provision to fit a starter or generator and cannot be retrofitted either.

The choice is a C85-8F at 159lbs with no electrical systems, or C-85-12F (169lbs) / O-200 (170lbs) plus 26lbs of starter and generator, by the time everything else including oil is put in the installed weight is over 220lbs.

Because I don't wish to expose myself to hand starting I would choose the heavier option regardless, but my 701 is of the heavier empty weight version and without any extra wing it is on its practical flying and handling limits with just the 2200a engine, when I operate 2 up and full fuel.
