OK, EE guys.
We got the relay by aircraft extras (aircraftextras.com) to control the elavator trim through the hat switch. Not expensive, well made, does the job (Thanks!).
What I'm wondering is: if i just got two SPDT 12v relays from radio shack, would it do the same thing? As you know, I love to tinker and the aircraft extras relay gizmo incorporates a couple of diodes and something else (?) to "protect against inductive sparking generated from relays switching inductive loads such as motors". How critical is this? Anybody just go with the relays?

While you're thinking about the relays, here's another one:
Are you isolating left and right grip controls with a switch on the panel? The schematic that came with the relay board just shows both wired in -- assumes only one pilot will trigger the hat switch? I've searched the archives and found some with a pretty hefty selector switch.

I wouldn't use the relay setup for nothing.....the fail safe trim system is the only way to go. IMHO...

Just a note to clarify this issue for anyone using the Vertical Power system. You do not need relays or other boards for the trim. It is all built-in and all solid-state. Also, the pilot and co-pilot inputs are handled appropriately when there is conflicting control inputs between the two.
On a separate but related note, you also do NOT need to install relays for the door latch annunciator switches. You just run the two switches in series from each door into a switched input pin, and you can change the logic (on when grounded or on when un-grounded) in the setup menus.

Note, though, that the VP only handles 2 trim servos, so if you have
3, then you will need a relay for the 3rd.

I have pitch, roll, and yaw trim on my VP 200 and don't have any
relay's. Maybe because I have VP-200 duo. ?

Correct. You have 2 trims per control unit.
Do not archive.

Each Control Unit can handle two trim servos. So a system with two control units ("red boxes") can control and display three trim servos.

Wow, Marc.
Thanks for your link. I can see now why others scoff at relays. At this
point we can only dream and drool of such an awesome gizmo!
