Hey Y'all,

The rubber material encasing the triangular shaped mounting surface of my M-14P oil sump chip detector is falling apart. It is not completely insulating the unit when attached.

As a result, I get a chip detector light on when at low power settings, i.e. less than cruise power. (There's another question: why only at lower power settings?)

Note: It is an electrical/insulation issue, not a chip issue, the unit is clean as a whistle...no debris in it at all. I also have an ADC filter screen with a chip light (also clean as a whistle.)

Question: Is there some way to repair the rubber insulation on this thing, or am I forced to just buy a new one...and can one buy one...from whom?

Thanks,
Steve Dalton

Steve,
You may try repairing the cracked rubber with a high temp silicone/RTV sealant. If you want to smooth out the sealant, try dipping your finger into light weight oil and rub your finger over the lumps to smooth it out. Keep your finger wet with the oil though or you'll still have lumps.

Steve,

In the power generating business, we use Glyptal as a spray or brush-on insulator for generator rotors, stators, busbars, and motor windings. It is oil, grease and temperature resistant. The product is a bit pricey, but it does work well. If you cannot find it locally, it is available from The Eastwood Company (www.eastwood.com) as Item # 46001 ZP for brush-on or 4600 Z for the spray. Several coats will be needed to build up the thickness, but I think this will work. Insulating washers under the nuts would help prevent scratching through the coating on installation.

A more readily available alternative might be Krylon 1385 Red Insulating Varnish, but I can't vouch for its durability.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Dennis and Rich. I already tried a quick RTV patch fix and complete cleaning/inspection, which helped some. Next step is to remove it again and do a "thorough" RTV repair.

Question: Why do I have a "Chip" light with the engine shut off, but it goes out after start and warm up and RPM above about 1200? It "appears" that increased oil pressure, which seems to make the light go out, is involved with this problem and not worn rubber insulation. Anybody have any experience with this?

Thanks,
Steve

About all I can think of is to make certain the two sections of the chip detector screen are perfectly aligned and tight. There are some "disks" between the two sections and if they are loose, will allow the chip detector screen in the rear section to shift around. Make certain the nut on the front of the chip detector at the center of the end with the rubber insulation is tight. A loose nut here will cause the looseness in the two sections. This can cause an erroneous and intermittent chip light to come on.

Carefully inspect the wiring from the chip detector screen back to through the baffling and firewall. Any intermittent ground on this wire will cause the chip light to come on.

Lastly, try replacing the chip detector screen assembly and see if the problem disappears.

Let us know what you find.

Thanks Dennis, I'll keep ya posted.

BTW, if I need to replace this chip detector who has one? Doug? Jill?

Cheers,
Steve

Don,
Does this sealant cure to solid like other RTV or does it remain soft and sticky?

Steve, Gary here in Las Vegas,, I have had a similar situation on my CJ with a Capacitance Fuel sending unit, it would indicate empty until I was at about 1200 RPM when the Alternator would come on line and then it would work ok , since then it has fixed itself, so Dennis's suggestion about a ground connection, or possibly B+ connection may have some resistance, may be a good thought... Just a thought.. Good Luck... Gary
