Hi all,,

up here in the great white north. 2 problems really, one I can't get affordable hull insurance on my Chang,, so I don't fly it in the winter.

2nd problem, how suseptible is the air system to icing? ie. water in line, climb up into below freezing air, come back down and blow a line because of Ice?

really looking for advice as to what is the lowest temp i should be flying my ship.

Mike

Hey Hoser,

I'm no expert but I flew all last winter in some mighty cold weather (well below freezing). Flew briefly in a few small snow squalls as well. Of course at those low temps the air is pretty dry, plus I gotta think the air coming out of the compressor is pretty warm. My biggest problem was getting the oil to warm up. I now have heaters on the sump, tank, and cooler. I still need some sort of baffle in the cooler inlet. I had no issues with my air system except at one point the right main stut got a little mushy. Keep the rpm below 1200 or so until the oil is up to temp. Oh, and God help whoever is in the rear cockpit. I bring a small blanket to stuff around the air leaks.

Come on down this winter and we'll go to Lake Winnipesaukee and land on the ice runway.

Keith,

Doug Sapp sells a very nice winterization/FOD screen for the oil cooler inlet. It has a sliding door to allow for adjustments to air flow and is straightforward to install. We install them on all our CJ's.
